Adaptive Headlight Defective - Make Sense?
When I got my car it had the upgraded headlights, xenoens with nice LED surrounds, unsure if they are the 2016 ones or just xenons? Anyway...
I did the whole VIN de-code yesterday, pretty cool and noticed one of the options was adaptive headlights. As mine keeps giving me the error every time I start it that it is defective (means I can keep an eye on my MPG, miles left etc as the warning takes over) - Would it make sense that the headlights that have been fitted are not adaptive? I just need to code into the car that they are not adaptive? Or are all newer lights adaptive? If i say adaptive once more in a post I may kill myself. Just wondered if I was thinking logically or nonsense. |

If you press the BC button it will move the light warning to a triangle and allow you read MPG etc. Are you sure it's not just a blow bulb warning?

What does it say in the warning?

Why would the headlights fitted be non-adaptive if your car has adaptive as an option? What's coding got to do with anything?

And coding side was - if the car is coded for adaptive lights (halogens - unsure if they do adaptive halogens - hence asking) and they have fitted none adaptive xenons (again not sure if they do this - I'm still new to the F30 world) would this cause the error? Cheers |

But if the VIN decoder lists adaptive headlights as an option then that is a factory-fit option - if they're retrofitted then the VIN decoder will show whatever it left the factory with. There is evidently a fault.
There is no such thing as adaptive halogens.

Strange one this...if the car originally came from the factory with adaptive headlights (which are only Xenon or LED, not halogen) and have been replaced with none-adaptive, I'd be asking questions. Maybe the car had a front end shunt and had parts replaced?
Like you say, may be a simple coding mistake if they have been retro-fitted. Do you have working headlamp washers? As that is probably a good indication whether the car originally came with Xenon headlights or not. Or as said, they could just be faulty?

So, your car originally came with halogens from the factory and now has upgraded BMW lights which are coded for Adaptive Lights? But, you don't know what units are fitted?
Do you have round rings or not fully round rings. Xenons have complete circles, LED's have non complete circles with a side spur. For adaptive lights you must also have a camera mounted in the driving mirror housing to monitor the road ahead. This should let you know if it's a full retrofit or miss-coding.

Thanks guys. Not playing dumb just the F30 world is a far cry from what I'm used to so trying to learn as much as I can!
On the De-Coder website I get - S522 Xenon Light S524 Adaptive Headlights No my car is previous repair so maybe they haven't put adaptive headlights back in! I will check the part numbers today. I haven't noticed any sort of camera in the drivers mirror housing! So again this maybe where things are going wrong! Xenon washers work OK and here is a picture of the lights I have... Again sorry for getting confused on most things just jumping ahead of the gun thinking I know more then I actually do! |

The VIN decoder states adaptive so that's what it left the factory with. Gives two options:
1) Adaptive lights are fitted but are faulty or the KAFAS camera is 2) Adaptive lights were fitted at manufacture but (possibly as a result of accident damage) some ignorant bodger has fitted the incorrect headlamp assemblies (non-adaptive xenon), looked at the error message and thought: "fcuk it". EDIT - reading your post again, if there is no KAFAS camera in the mirror housing that is even more bizzare. Why would that have been removed?

LAST alternative is code the car to not think it has them, which I really don't want to do as it came with them from factory I would rather get the parts needed and get it fitted. First thing is to check PN's on headlights to see if they are adaptive version or not. Then work from there. Can see this being expensive! |

I'd take a picture of the KAFAS camera in mine so you know what to look for but mine is at the dealers today having the steering rack replaced.

The camera is only required if the car is fitted with high beam assist regardless of adaptive or not.
OP, do you have another button underneath the BC button on your indicator stalk? I would assume that whoever repaired the car didn't fit adaptive headlights...

You can't have adaptive without HBA so any car with adaptive will have the camera.

Ok been to the car on lunch! I could only see a sticker on the drivers headlight and PN is 63117259548 but can't find much on google? I have camera and no sticker on passenger light?
If that Pn doesn't match adaptive we're going down the cheap repair idiot work As for a button yeah I have 2 I think, top one is BC and unsure on bottom one! Will check when I finish! |

That is a KAFAS camera in your mirror housing, the one flush to the glass is the rain sensor.
Having said that, although that is a camera housing it doesn't look like the camera itself is actually present!

Oh... I will analyse more after work, maybe just a new camer then? Why it would be out I have no idea! Does that part number match that of adaptive lights? I can't find anything online to say yay or nay!

I know I'm thinking way outside the box here, but perhaps have a BMW service department run a diagnostic on your car?
They should be able to track down exactly what is wrong in minutes. |
