SONOFA... Well, actually, the manual doesn't really discount what he said...
It does beg to question, however, that with dual heating/cooling, dual zone directional air flow, and his and hers adjustable heated seats, why would they need this little dial thingy if not to give you fresh air (of your temperature choosing) when driving. We've all rolled down the window on a long drive to get some fresh air, so it does stand to reason... but what do I know, I drove a copper orange, 2002 Jeep Wrangler X up until I bought my Jet Black beauty.

Guys, it's just a manual adjuster for the Ventilation. You can adjust the temperature of the middle vents in relation to all the other vents. That's the way it's been since the e46. Not all variations of the 3 had this feature, but its rather old.

I like my sales guy's story better... even if it's only imaginary, it's damn sexy!

FWIW, if it is anything like my E46, it is the main way you control temperature. You can set the thermostat to 72F and then change the dial to be colder or super duper hot.
And no, I never understood the reasoning behind this in 6 years of ownership. |

So wait ... you set the climate control to whatever temp ... and then there's a separate red/blue temperature control that does what?

It controls the temperature of the middle vents. So you can have warm feet and a cool face or the other way around. Just think of it as a second zone in the ac unit. Just as you can have two or more zones in the fridge.

OK cool, so it's just the middle vents then. I thought we were talking about ALL the vents
So is there a setting to just leave it alone and under the influence of the climate control?

Usually I leave it all to the blue/cold side so it gets the cool air from the ac. But when the weather gets colder I tend to turn more to the middle or eventually to the warmer side. Just according to your needs.

If the A/C is on and I have the wheel on full blue, it seems like the A/C doesn't cut off at the temp I want; it just keeps blowing really cold air out the middle vents. I can only stop it by moving the wheel towards the red until the temp seems good. Anyone else? I have not tried the full red side as it's still too damn hot here... |

and i have never really understood what the real purpose of that button either. one thing is for sure : it does make the temperature either cooler or warmer/hotter. In the Winter time, i dial it to the red. In the summer time, i dial it and leave it to the blue side. Doing the opposite would give you those weird situations that i have also observed: 1) if i use Air Conditionning, and i leave to the red side, the output of the vents is rather lukewarm and not as cool as i wish for (especially during the summer) 2) if i use heater, to warm myself up during winter time, but i would leave the knob in the blue side, what comes out of the vent would not be warm enough for me In conclusion, i think it has something to do with the engine heat and outside "fresh" air. Leave it in the blue means that : if you were to pull in outside air into the cabin, the temperature would be purely at outside temperature. Leave it in the red means that : if you were to pull in outside air into the cabin, the temperature blown by the vent would be a mix between the "cool" outside "fresh" temperature and that of the "hot" engine air no naturally warm the cabin without having to use the heater (HVAC)

Interesting audio feature....may have already been mentioned...
If you are in Canada ( no Pandora) and love Slacker Radio (or any other music streaming app) with the USB plugged in you can run Slacker and it will play through the system, show album art...a bit finicky with this...., and allow you to pause. Until Slacker comes up with a BMW app this is a reasonable alternative...... |

I thought so too - I had an E36 compact (predecessor to the 1 series) before my E90 and thought to remember having this wheel also, but I couldn't find any picture of a e36 cockpit having this feature.

that little storage compartment by the drivers left knee is really hidden unless you seek it out. Great use of what would be usually useless space.

just figured out to make the passenger side mirror turn down in reverse to view the rear tire you must have the switch on the door to the left.

Does anyone know what lies below the middle compartment. It's located in front of the stick shift or in front the place for bottle. There is like a small place to put coins beside the plug. There are holes under the compartment in mine if you pull it out. Is there suppose to be anything below? like maybe usb plug or anything? Mine looks a bit weird cos the holes seems not meant to be there
