Got a drivetrain malfunction last week. Turns out the fuel pressure sensor failed on my car, and the dealer is saying they can't find the part from Germany. BMW recommended them to replace the whole fuel tank. Sounds a little ridiculous to me and my SA is a little baffled as well.
I did not buy the car from the dealership where the car is currently being serviced, but I don't think that should be an issue. I hope not! My car is now about 6 months old with 7500 miles on it. Anyone has similar issues or experience? Thanks guys -------full story----- I was driving on the freeway carving through traffic on a Thursday evening when the traffic was a bit slow at the rush hour. Got a drive train malfunction warning and the car almost completely stalled. About 25mph and 1500 rpm. Was lucky that the traffic was slow on the freeway and I was close to an exit. Managed to pull up on the off ramp, but the engine just went dead. The car would start momentarily but shut off again. Called BMW assist and it took them about 20 mins to get all the information from me and figure out where they can sends a tow truck. Quite annoyed at that point of time because isn't the assist suppose to send your gps coordinates so they know where you are roughly located? Waited with my hazard warning lights on as it got darker. I had washed the car previous night and a couple of stupid passersby were honking wondering why I am stalled on the road with a new car. Car got towed to the dealership (1 mile away) around 7.45 and they were obviously closed. Next morning I visit the dealership and the car would crank but not start. Later in the afternoon I was told the fuel pressure sensor malfunctioned. I remember the car showing about quarter tank when the drivetrain malfunction sign showed up. They said they will look for the part and order it to get the car fixed. Today I got a call from the SA, that the whole fuel tank needs to be replaced. The dealership could not find the part in the BMW catalog with the same part number and SA said BMW told them to replace the complete fuel tank. The tank is now on order from Jacksonville, FL. Anyone finds this strange, or had a similar problem/experience?

My fuel tank got replaced because it was reading wrong. Apparently the fuel transfer pump within the tank got shot for some reason. They replaced the whole tank. Not the same issue but similar.
Good luck with the issue. I know the feeling..

if the part they need is attached to a fuel tank and they dont want to split up the pieces, they will just give you the whole thing because it would be easier than waiting 2 weeks for the part you nee to come from germany
when my car broke, all i needed was a megatronic controller from the transmission...but instead of getting the piece from germany, they gave me a whole transmission

Thanks guys. Good to know BMW tries to get things fixed sooner and not hold on to cost savings even though we are covered with the warranty. Looking forward to get my car back next week.

Actually, might have to deal with the fact that you're in CA and you probably have a SULEV car - the fuel tanks are sealed, meaning that if something goes wrong with it, the whole thing has to go.

I just found out today that my entire gas tank has to be replaced. I've never smelled any gas or seen any leaks. In all my years of owning a lot of cars, I've never had to replace an entire gas tank. Just furious at BMW. Gonna cost me $2,185 including labor to replace.

What kind of symptoms did you guys have after the drivetrain malfunction?
We were in my wife's 2014 X3 (x35 so N55) on Sunday and as I was about to pass someone on the highway, the car freaked out > drivetrain malfunction > could barely accelerate. Pulled over, waited a little while, restarted and had terribly rough idle, exhaust had white smoke coming out and immediate smell of gas. Car sounded like a go kart. Had to drive about 4 miles home going about 30 the whole way. Shop says they think it's the HPFP... hoping it's not the whole fuel tank instead. |

If the repair is under warranty.....I don't care if they replace the car itself...but then again if it is coming out your wallet....then I have to question why

The fuel pump failed on my car and I got the drivetrain malfunction.
BMW replaced the whole fuel tank. I don't see why the whole tank had to be replaced they can be taken out and on the older BMW's the fuel pumps can be changed. There was a recall related to the fuel pump but I can't remember the details. |

My 328i died last friday showing 1/4 tank. Had it towed to the dealership, and they are saying it needs a new in tank fuel pump (covered under extended warranty on the part) AND A WHOLE NEW FUEL TANK at approximately $2k to replace. The tech couldn't give me an exact part that failed, just that the part that failed is on the far side of the tank from the fuel pump, and is not serviceable or replaceable. It looks like there are two fuel level sensors, and the one that failed is not reachable (I'm assuming).
The fact that I have to replace a fuel tank at 65k miles...WTF BMW?! Has anyone fixed this themselves? I'll swap a used tank in before I pay the dealer $2k...

Yes.
Fuel tank replacement estimated to cost $2,100. BMW Corporate denied my request for ANY financial consideration towards the repair. So now I get to track my fuel level based on mileage, just like my 45+ year old BMW motorcycles w/o fuel gauges! Yay! Except I don't have a petcock to flip to reserve on the exquisite technical and reliable masterpiece that is the F30 328i. BMW Service Manager: "EVEN THOUGH WE KEEP A F30 TANK IN PARTS INVENTORY AT ALL TIMES, There just aren't enough of these failures to warrant extending the warranty coverage on the fuel tank, or a recall. Why don't you just trade it in?" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BMW Service Advisor: "I've had several of these exact same failures, we just had another this week." BMW. The only vehicle manufacturer that does not expect or design their fuel tanks to last past 68,000 miles, or even until the release of their next generation vehicle. I'm trying to think of a funny bmw acronym for this but can't because of how pissed I am. Somebody help me out with one. BMW: Better Makesureyou're in Warranty? Dear BMW, forcing your customers to drive around with a spare gas can and a calculator is not exactly the way to achieve brand loyalty and repeat sales. I bought this car based on perceived value and quality as a long term vehicle owner, but its painfully clear to me the only folks BMW gives a shit about are people leasing these vehicles.

In this case, you have a bad transfer pump/level sensor on the far side of the tank. Is it the transfer pump? Or the level sensor? Well, even BMW doesn't seem to know, because you see, the parts are non-serviceable. You need a $2,200 fuel tank replacement! Some engineer designed the fuel tank this farfegnugen way and said "this will never break!". All I can infer is that BMW does not design or expect their fuel tanks, or related non-serviceable parts, to last past 68k miles. And they could give a shit about it because it won't affect new vehicle leases, or CPO vehicles off lease. They just swap out those tanks under warranty. I wonder how many they've done under warranty...those posts don't show up here all the time because they're happy campers. But pity the fool that keeps a car post CPO or buys one private party. BMW doesn't give a shit about that fool...or people that don't flip cars every 24 months.
