Something for the OP to think about while enjoying his new ride.

The sound of an exhaust upgrade (oh and bit of a power upgrade)

That sounds awesome. It soon disappeared into the horizon as well!

Oh dear - I'm now tempted by one of these.

Gents,

Car collected and almost 500 miles covered. Initial thoughts:

- Exterior: Car looks classy , pretty aggressive front , nice black side skirt (not too flashy) and conservative back with 4 pipes. Have seen other colors in flesh but white seems to nicely highlight all design patterns , I prefer it to other colors. Car is just about right in term of size , nice change from driving a bus (S8) LOL. I will be replacing stock wheels but truthfully they are more than ok if you are not bothered.

IMO: 7/10

- Interior : I was pretty concerned that moving from S8 to Golf (quality and feel) will be a pain in the butt but nice surprise - all elements are of high quality , I really like sat-nav integration , surrounded by piano black inserts. I find seats small for my liking (190 cm / 6'2) but they offer great support and I quite like fact that they didn't use leather (on standard spec) - you can really give it some beans and still expect decent support from seats. There is couple of small compartments and boxes around driver , door bins are huge and covered in suede - perfect! Arm support fully extends , nice blue LED strips on doors sills. Seating position is just about right as well.

IMO: 7/10

Tech / Sound: - Freaking awesome! Active display is just brilliant , perhaps not as cool and customisable as Audi's but pretty close. Touch screen based media system very responsive , decent resolution and loads of options. IMO completely no point getting PRO DNS..car has built-in Android Auto and it works!!!!! That's the best feature for me so far. Google maps , own playlists , voice control and its a proper voice control (through Google). Dynamic light are very good , not as good or responsive as S8 Martix LED's but still great addition to car. DynaAudio is brilliant (only 550 option!) , very punchy and clear. Perhaps simplifying is the way forward as car's environment is too compromised - they installed only 10 speakers but in terms of sound , on pair with S8 Bose (I prefer bass in VW though).Small thing but folding mirrors are very quiet.... Regret not getting key-less access , I literally missed this one but no biggie.

IMO 8/10

Performance / suspension: Engine feels new and not run in yet but to put things in perspective.... it will deffo give 335d or 340i run for its money. Nothing happens until 3k and then turbo kicks in and car pulls like crazy to 7/8 k rpm! Sound engine is ok - DSG farts very loud on up-shifts / downshifts. Shifter is ridiculously quick but will be changing its software anyway. Suspension is fairly firm (adaptive would sort it out) but livable. If road is good then car drives perfect. Now the biggest fun - precision of steering and the way car behaves on quick roads is just... well it puts smile on my face every single time. Way ahead of any other car i had driven recently. I know I am going to love this thing purely for its driving capabilities - this is how planted and sorted GOLF R suspension is.

IMO 9/10

Finally , I am very happy with it. R drives good , sounds good , pretty frugal for 300 bhp! Avg consumption is around 28 - 30 mpg. Boot seems big but not massive , rear bench space is fine for 2 adults.

Looks very nice. I miss my R...great for b roads. Few cars can really keep up with one on a set b road.
I binned my bridgestones and put MPSS on and that made it even better..
The hatch got a bit of a bad image due to idiots getting cheap lease but the estate looks great in white ...

Lovely write up and double bonus for me as I now have a build slot for next week

I went adaptive (DCC) with mine as being a dog machine I need to have some comfort setting lol.

I do think they have a good not over the top look (apart from the 4 pipes).

Counting the days now.

Oh and remember review post obligatory update to power, gearbox and paddles

Congrats

Very nice fella. I very nearly pulled the trigger on getting a Golf R but the mileage I was doing put me off over the 335d, plus the BMW badge is cooler

Nice car and interesting initial review.

Hope your enjoyment grows as you get under the skin of it a bit more.

I went from a 335d saloon to the R estate. 0-60 the short gearing and torque of the 335d puts it on probably an even keel (VWs quoted 0-100km times are very conservative) but above 60mph the R is definitely quicker stock Vs stock due to the lighter weight. With a JB4 on the R Vs a tuning box on my 335d there is no comparison - the R feels shockingly quick all the time, especially with an aftermarket intake the pull up to 6.5k rpm is very hard indeed.

On top of that - I have considered my Gran Turismo MC Shift to have one of the fastest semi auto on the market. Had a proper blast this morning using paddles - OMFG -DSG is a killer , you can downshift like 3 gears in literally no time - bloody amazing - ordering ST2 paddle shifters today as stock ones are as bad as ... my ex wife

I bought some aluminium ones off fleabay for 10% of the price of the ST2 ones, look and feel nice enough. I'd spend the rest of the money on a set of Eibach springs or an intake personally but ETTO.

I'm also tempted by a gloss black Maxxton roof spoiler extension but can't work out if it would look nice and subtle or sh*t and tacky?

They've really improved the gearbox over consecutive versions. I've still got the old 6 speeder, which is excellent 99% of the time, but if changing down gears at slower speeds e.g. 3rd to 2nd approaching a corner it can change slower than you'd like sometimes. When pushing on its brilliant though. In yours with the new 7 speed does that seem to have been eliminated?

P.S - looks great in white, thoughts on aftermarket wheels? I've got the gloss anthracite Revo RV019s which are a lovely wheel.

I think they have eliminated (as I would have noticed) it cause that was working on my nerves in S8 when torque-converter was taking longer than needed to change gear on relaxed drive. Absolute beast when pushing - car is not settled yet (engine , transmission) but drives so good! Deffo JB4 and DSG software update - now you have added springs to equation

Glad you are all enjoying your new R's, great cars and it's nice now all the anger surrounding them seems to have subsided on the various forums.

Had mine a year this month and it's now running Revo software and some intake hardware, resonator delete (which brings the sound of the car alive) and some Eibach springs and MPSS tyres - made for a ridiculously quick car that's completely practical.

Enjoy your cars gents
