Yes, here in CT, the level of "paid" support is...pretty dismal. Birdgeport, CT, is pretty much the closest area for this sort of support, and I'd end up getting shot or mugged in the loaner 535i before I...had fun.

Yep, welcome to the real world. A few months ago, I had made my mind up to get a 535i F10 to be a more comfortable daily driver than my E92 M3 (two kids, now). I spec'd out the F10, made the numbers work, and everything. I even love the way the car looks, inside and out! It's a classy ride. Then, I drove it. What a boat. There is no sportiness to it, at all. It just feels like I'm plowing around in my dad's Buick. Sure, the inside is great. But if feels like you're just piloting a barge, while being isolated from the mechanics of the car as well as the outside world. I realize this is what some people want. And most F10 guys are really in love with their car. But for me, it was far removed from "the Ultimate Driving Machine". |

Easy fix, invite the gorilla trying to mug you in for a treeway. plenty of room in a 535. then while he's hogging the cheapchick all for himself grab his gun |

I was never under false pretense that they would be close, but driving them back to back, it is hard to believe they are even from the same manufacturer. Two different goals with an M3 vs. F10. But after driving the F10, I don't feel it has any more dynamic ability than the equivalent Lexus, Buick, MB, etc.

I thought the F10 did well in the turns... it felt heavy, but in Sport+ mode the steering was tight and precise. In comparison to a Camry, the F10 is a very very sporty sedan. If I were 20 years older and had 3 kids there is no way I could pass up the F10.

I'm happy with the F30...if I can only find that comfy seating position, I'll be golden

The design goal for the 5 series is no longer just performance, its a combination of things. Considering that the 5 series is basically a mini 7 series, it is one heck of a solid car. Interior material and seating is world class and the suspension might not be the sportiest, but its one the best combination of comfort and performance. |

Other car companies are catching up to BMW as far as performance. BMW's answer to that is not to design cars based on just performance alone, if they did, it would make their car too hard core, the ride will be too rough and not what the general public wants, they have their M division for that. Instead, design cars that are solid, comfortable, well built and still perform well. As the recent sales numbers have indicate, this is what the general public want in a car, not some pocket rocket that goes like a bat out of hell. Last edited by The X Men; 11-17-2012 at 10:37 AM.. |

To me having driven both 3 and 5 series over 35-years, a 3 is an adolescent, the 5 is a grown up, it is mature. M-cars are the real 'sporty' range. To be frank there is a 'faux' element of sporty in the basic 3-series range, IMO. I personally think BMW were losing their way and losing customers due to that, certainly in the UK, where sporty translated to hard and harsh, on most of our roads.
I view the E39 5-series as the pinnacle of what BMW is really all about, the DNA or essence of BMW, the near perfect blend of what a mature car should be. The E60/1 lost that feeling, IMO, falling short on the "comfort side" of sporty... The F10/11 has got that back. If any car is worthy to follow the E39 BMW pedigree, the F10 does, maybe grown a bit too much, but most models grow generation after generation. The original E12 5-series was much smaller than the current 3-series. But that is the fault of the marketing men and desire of users wanting "class leading" dimensions. A 'size race' in the motoring industry. Nothing wrong with the 3-series, (I've owned one for the past 6-years), just but don't expect a 3 and a 5 to be the same. The current generations, (F30 and F10) are blurring the edges, but still quite distinct in the "adolescent and mature" status. The F10/11 does require the right specification to have the 'sporty' edge. Adaptive Drive makes a vast difference to how the car feels on the road. Then even the E39 required the M-tech suspension to get the best from the chassis. Goal posts have moved on, but what's new? HighlandPete |

Yes and I agree, but the tone of the orginal post suggust that the F10 is less of a car than the 3 series, that might be true for your needs, but its not everybody. The 5 series is quite a nice car for what its is design to do, if you consider that aspect of things, it may change your opinion of it.
