South Africa Build

Anyone have a South Africa build? I ordered a 340xi, SA. I tried to put in my production number, but MyBMW couldn't find the build. Anyone in the same situation? Also, I wonder how long it would take to ship to the east coast, US.

I put in an order for a Munich build 2016 340i on June 6th and I could only track it on the website after it reached the port of exit last week.
Try the 800# automated status check. You may have more luck with it.

I'd say about 8 - 12 weeks to hit the East Coast.

I placed an order over 4 weeks ago. Car completed production over a week ago and is "waiting to be released to carrier". I've been told it needs "engineering/software update". No idea when it will ship. Will go to Germany before coming to US. Looking like another month at the soonest. Frustrating since its been out of production for a week.

Hi Headwind, I have some question for you:
-how many days was the production start to finish?
-how did you know that it will go to Germany before coming to US?

-My 340i just started production

Order was placed July 15. Car completed production on August 7. Has been "waiting to be released to carrier" since. All cars produced in SA head to Germany then US. Not sure exactly why but its how its done. Maybe to pick up additional cars? I was told on Friday at best mid-Sept if not later. No way to know when it will ship. Only upon shipping can a date for arrival be determined. Frustrtaing.

My order was placed July 19.

This is the second BMW i waited for production this year. My previous car, M235, built in Germany, took 1 week to build but afterwards it took 1 week to transport to port and waited at port for 3 weeks, then was delayed a few days when it was traveling out at sea. Hang in there! Sometimes it takes a long time just waiting to get on boat....

I just checked on with the automated 800 number, it says my car is "released to carrier to transport to port of exit", what's the status with your car?

yay! I will call the 800 number and talk to a live person and ask for more details on the status. I am guessing that most of the waiting will be for the transport of the car.

what was your build? i think my build is similar to yours

I just checked with 800 number with a live person, my car actually finished production on Aug 8, and was released to carrier to transport to port on Aug 17. The website only said it started production on Aug 15, the guess the website is 7 days behind.

Headwind, it looked like we have similar build, transport times.

Based on my research, most of the cars from SA are transported to port of Durban, SA (for US ports). A small portion is shipped to Maputo, Mozambique(for Eastern/Asian Countries).

Quote:
"Annual production at the assembly plant in Rosslyn, Pretoria has risen from 50000 to about 80000 units, and exports from 33000 to almost 70000. Durban can handle most of the extra but BMW SA MD Bodo Donauer says 14000 cars will be shipped annually through Maputo."
I am guessing that Wallenius Wilhelmsen is shipping the cars from Durban, SA to New York/New Jersey Port.

Here is the shipping schedule from Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics shipper:

This is about 40 days at sea from Durban to New York for my car!

Bimmercar, I do not quite understand your screenshot. So when do you think cars will ship from SA? My car completed production on 8/7 and has not shipped. Very frustrating!!

After seeing this I am SO glad I managed to get mine moved to Munich. Still got delayed a lot longer than I expected, but I really don't think I could handle that kind of wait.

I am ready to cancel order. Ordered in July. Car finished production 8/7. To now have to wait until November is insane. At this point I no longer care. I was told I would have car by September. I think you should be informed when placing order if SA build and the prolonged wait probability is high.

yeah, its a very long wait. i guess i was not informed either of the very long wait. well i knew SA cars don't start production until August. My SA never mentioned that it was a SA build nor how long it takes.

Yes. 340 has been sitting at dock waiting for carrier for over a week as well. I guess I have a couple more months so shop for accessories.
