How to replace brake pads
Dealers quoting me nearly 500 bucks for brake pads. Sensors included I suppose.
I'm just trying to save that kind of money by doing it on m own. I just need to know if bleeding is necessary. I need BMW requires ista with bleeding which I never successed in. |

Normally when changing pads, if you are not opening the brakelines or letting the reservoir get too low as to allow air to enter the system, you do not need to bleed the system as no air has entered.

OP: Why aren't you also changing rotors? SOP for BMW is to have both done at same time.

My original M Sport Brake Option rotors have 78,000 miles on them between original M Sport Brake Option pads and F8X M3/M4 stock pads. They are still within spec. |

If you have no idea what you're doing, find a good independent mechanic. The dealership is not your only option. You can buy whatever pads you want and take them to a good mechanic that works on a lot of BMWs and they can do the brake job for you at half the price of the dealer. I'd recommend buying OEM parts. OEM parts are about $80-$100 I think per pair. So $500 isn't ridiculous but an outside mechanic can probably do it in about 30 minutes and charge you about $100 in labor.
Everyone with an out of warranty BMW should find a good indy mechanic. I'll admit it's easier to find one for BMWs in California, but you should be able to find one in Indy as well. If you really want to do it yourself and you have at least some experience working on cars: If the dealer said you just need new pads slapped on, then you can probably just do that since they presumably inspected the rotors. But you should still measure the rotor thickness, make sure the rotor surface is smooth, and make sure there's no lip. Changing just pads is easy. You jack the car, remove the wheel, remove brake hardware, remove a slider pin bolt, remove old pads, compress piston, add new pads, bolt in slider, add brake hardware, reinstall sensor, install wheel. Done. If you have fixed caliper (sport) brakes, then it's even easier. |

replacing pads requires loosening 2 bolts per wheel. The "hardest" part is getting the spring retainer back on.

I got quoted $460 at the dealer for front pad replacement, which is too much and i'll be tackling this myself. After looking online i found the pads for about $130 plus a few bucks for anti-squeal grease and brake cleaner. I have a 335i M Sport so the front brake calipers are different from the 328i, and i think easier to replace. I'm replacing mine next week (for my first time) and this video is what Im using as a guide. I know its for an M car but the calipers are the same and the pad replacement will be the same. good luck.

How do you make the "brake" warning go away on the dash if you do them yourself? I have tons of meat left on my pads but the car is insisting I need brakes.. the warnings are driving me nuts. |

My remark was towards the two bolts being Untightened and no one had any specifics on what brake kit it is so I'm assuming just like you are..

As long as we've revisited this, you don't need to change rotors, but they should be resurfaced. If you have the right tools that's something you can do yourself, but most take them to an auto parts store that offers that service, on average for maybe $20 each. However, you can't drive the car to and from the store with the rotors removed, and you'll probably have to leave them for a day.
