Time to put your Winter's on

Looks like this coming weekend is the right time to put our Winter tyres on, next week looks pretty chilly!

I've managed to drive for the last 35 winters without putting winter tyres on my car and can't see much point.

Well that's very lucky for you, you obviously lived somewhere in the tropics for that time. but for those of us are living countries that get snow and ice winter tyres are an excellent idea!

Not only for being able to move in snow (winter before last I couldn't leave my house for a week!) but also the increased safety in sub 7 degree temperatures!

How many of those years did you have a rear wheel drive car with Summer tyres on?

And so the debate starts again..........Every car forum now seems to have this debate each winter

unfortunately with my car being a company car it's not even a discussion point and I have to manage accordingly with my Bridgestones so will never know how much safer/better my car could be with weather specific tyres.

If I get stuck at home so be it

Are you not allowed to put winter tyres on a company car?

And I'm self employed so if I don't work i don't get paid! That week I couldn't work alone would pay for the winter wheels 2-3 times over!

I would have to fund the wheels tyres myself as our business doesn't believe they are required. Our Director has a 5 series and doesn't have a problem and told us if it's not safe to drive we shouldn't be out on the roads anyhow.

If that's the rules I can work within those parameters as I am certainly not funding wheels/tyres on someone else's vehicle.

I wish all taxi drivers were considerate enough to put on winter tyres.

I'm with you, bad weather = train, weather too bad for train = home.

I'm not self employed and work from home for a significant proportion of my time. When I'm out and about I'm visiting hospitals; they tend not to want to see you in really bad weather on account of being rather busy themselves!

I'm fortunate not to 'need' to switch.

Ah I see in your situation it doesn't make sense at all then!

Firstly, the OP was about whether people should put their winters on, not whether (or not) people should buy them. Clearly if someone has gone to the effort and expense of buying them, they are going to use them. (For the record, some people's location/work circumstances/ dependency on their car/straightforward confidence or lack thereof -which is sometimes better to be lower- about driving in reduced grip conditions, will all be factors in their decision to buy winters.)

The other thing, is that our weather is not consistent enough to mean one day the temp dips below 7c and stays there, but remember that on the odd 8+c day, the car on winters won't suddenly feel like it's on ice, nor will the tyres melt, and so looking at the weather forecast and the fact we're about to get into December means now is probably about the right time.

Incidentally, I have never crashed or had much problem on summer tyres in winter for many years, but have still had winters on for the last 4 winters.

I'm enjoying my non runflats too much to want to be in a hurry to change to my winter run flat set up! I expect I will do it when I see the first forecast of icy/snow weather, or just before I go to Poland for xmas, whichever comes first.

I'm looking forward to my winters because they are non RFT!

Will be interesting to see how differently they ride!

When I got this car it was always in my plan to get winter tyres. Ever since I watched the unfortunate gent in a 5 series get stuck in a car park. He'd parked nose in to a space on a very slight incline with a light covering of snow. There were many amused shoppers who couldn't understand why there was a lot of wheelspining and cursing coming from that car

I'm in the camp of id rather have them and not need them than need them and not have them. Unfortunately most wont't realise until they need them until they are sliding toward the scene of the accident.....

Mine are booked to go on in the first week of December.

All season tend to have sipes in the tread blocks, although fewer than proper winter tyres. The Bridgestone Potenzas on mine don't have sipes and I'm pretty sure that none of the factory tyres do. They would also be made from a different rubber compound - while that is harder to spot, I am pretty confident that they just fit regular summer tyres.
