Day Time Running Lights

Hi All

Have had my 320d ED for a week or so now and i'm loving it.

Is there anyway that the daytime running lights can be turned off, in my E90 there was an option in the Idrive but this car does not have the option.
Even when the light switch is set to off they are still on!

I think it will look horrible in the summer with lights on.

Maybe a coding option?

They are compulsory since early 2011.

You need to code Daydriving_Light from perm_off to standard. It then adds the option to switch off the DRL in the lights menu. I've already done it to my car, but no way am I switch off my DLR rings.

As NISFAN says its now law to have DRL.

The standard F30 DRL's do look naff. Is that just BMW trying to push people to buy Xenons?

Must be a UK thing that you can't turn them off without coding. I have an option in iDrive to turn them off.

I'm hoping to get some whiter bulbs for my halogen DRL's, will investigate once I have got the car.

It's an EU law not just the UK.

Only really noticed the drl's today after noticing that the pheasant incindant had dislodged the drivers side drl.

I have the standard lights and they do look a bit baff, has anyone swapped the bulbs for whiter ones

I swapped the dipped beam bulbs and it was definitely worth the effort in terms of increased light output. My DRL bulbs are standard at the moment, but there was a thread on changing them:

It is an easy coding change to add the option to iDrive to switch them off.

Well bugger me! I did not know they were now compulsory in the UK! I thought car manufacturers were just including them for cheap aesthetics! Huh, that's shocked me actually! I love my Angel Eyes

But if I had a Jag XF, I would've been turning them off somehow, because well, that's not Jaguarish and they are not integrated well IMO - just an afterthought, or a regulation that needed to be fulfilled.

Well, I have learnt something tonight!

Regarding DRLs...

A couple have mentioned them being law on new vehicles now and I thought the same. But what about our two week old S-Max Zetec? That doesn't have them. The model above (Titanium) does. Is there some opt out for models that were introduced before a certain date?

Answering my own question...

'type approved' being the relevant bit. Presumably any models type approved before that date don't have to have them but some manufacturers are fitting them anyway and some aren't.

One of the reasons I did not order another Jaguar XF and looked at other options... they are definitely a love / hate thing!

I too like DLR. On my previous cars I would turn on the side lights as they didn't have DLR, so that I was more visible. That is the problem with driving a dark car on country lanes, a one of visibility. I felt DLR were a must and slowly whittled my car choice down till I found ones that had DLR as standard. Some new cars that I had initially chosen didn't have DLR, so were struck off the list.

I know what you mean! The XF's DRL look really odd, like an knee-jerk 'we need to add LED's to our car' sort of add on. There is a great BMW youtube video which talks about designing headlights. The designer clearly says they wanted their LED lights to be solid rather than the tacky looking dot dot dot lines.

The DRL are awesome, I didn't have xenon/DRL rings on my E91. The Vis pack was the first option I ticked when I was ordering. Over the weekend I was tailed by a 328i White F30 M Sport without the DRL's; looked like any other car from a distance. The LED DRL just gives the car that extra wow factor.
