I think you're right. Guess only way on knowing is driving a SE X-Drive on 19" and can compare them. Running out of dealers with demos..

It is possible that the 335d has its own stiffer but standard length springs but I bet it doesn't. I also would fathom a guess that every single press car will have adaptive and VSS on them.

I understand that, but it is the same basic engine as both 30d and 35/40d. Therefore with a consistent driving style, the fuel consumption should be similar.

An X5 is a much heavier and less aerodynamic car, you'd be lucky to see 30-35 mpg as an average return

I specced one too and it came to £50K.

The 5 series would be a much better bet IMO.

I specced up a 535d M Sport with all bits I wanted. £2k down over 48 months was £915 a month.

Same spec on 335d X Drive M Sport was.... £962 a month, over £200 per month more than identically specced 330d M Sport (s-drive) (£750). Even 330d X Drive M Sport was only £780.

Much as I'd like the 335d, that is just daft. If I wanted to spend over £900 a month, I'd get the 5 as you suggest.

I agree. But had to buy 2 cars with just over £5k of options on each to get that price.

Lol, but I am not talking about an X5, we were discussing a 350d. No reason why a (hypothetically speaking) 50d engined F30 couldn't return similar fuel mileage as a similar engined 30d or 35/40d.

this would imply that an SE with Adaptive suspension and an M Sport with Adaptive suspension are NOT the same setup... can't be right?

My right foot is like Jekyll and Hyde.

Would be nice to have a car that responds to both those personalities, and yup the 350d would do a splendid job at that

You could lease an M5 for that.....suddenly 315hp doesn't look that attractive at all

No the adaptive option makes both equal, but the SE needs M Sport roll bars thrown in where the M Sport spec already has them....hence the difference in price

Idea was to use less fuel that I'm using already (excuse to get a new car!) - figure M5 will about the same.

However, has got me thinking. Nearly new Alpina D5.... Just how much more would it be that 335d and Autocar got 45mpg on their long termer. Have popped an email over to Sytner (rude not to)... EDIT - forget that idea - they want me to pay 10% APR.

Think sense will prevail and I'll end up with 330d M Sport.

It would seem that the 330d M Sport is fast becoming the golden nugget of the F30/31 series.

Prefer the Luxury meself, I find the M-Sport is just too compromised in terms of colour and interior design choice, but it's horses for courses.

I agree, and to me it feels like history repeating itself. ie with the old E90 the 335d was a lot quicker than the original 231bhp 330d...but...then they brought out the 245bhp 330d LCI model with virtual identical 0-60 as the 335d. In fact I believe only after 70mph would the 335d pull away from a 330d LCI. When I bought mine I could not see any point in shelling out another £3K for the 335d for so little difference in performance.

OK, obviously the F30 335d appears to be a lot quicker on paper than the F30 330d, but like the E90, is it really that good value and worth the extra dosh? And the extra performance is the ONLY reason to buy a 335d. But there are compromises.

The downsides as with the previous E90 335d are:
  • Premium price tag
  • Thirstier than the 330d
  • Far heavier than the 330d (like a BIG 90kg - 330d sdrive vs 335d xdrive)
  • No M Sport suspension and much higher ride due to xdrive
  • No two exhausts so looks like lesser models in the range

The smart money says stick with the 330d.
