I agree, and to me it feels like history repeating itself. ie with the old E90 the 335d was a lot quicker than the original 231bhp 330d...but...then they brought out the 245bhp 330d LCI model with virtual identical 0-60 as the 335d. In fact I believe only after 70mph would the 335d pull away from a 330d LCI. When I bought mine I could not see any point in shelling out another £3K for the 335d for so little difference in performance.

OK, obviously the F30 335d appears to be a lot quicker on paper than the F30 330d, but like the E90, is it really that good value and worth the extra dosh? And the extra performance is the ONLY reason to buy a 335d. But there are compromises.

The downsides as with the previous E90 335d are:
  • Premium price tag
  • Thirstier than the 330d
  • Far heavier than the 330d (like a BIG 90kg - 330d sdrive vs 335d xdrive)
  • No M Sport suspension and much higher ride due to xdrive
  • No two exhausts so looks like lesser models in the range

The smart money says stick with the 330d.
I think you're completely right (though that 330d x-drive's wet weather traction was astonishing...)

At the start of this thread as I said my money would have been on a 335d....

....but not anymore, yep for a F30 its the 330d or 335i.

(or the M435i that is inbound )

Dealer has come back. 335d will not be offered with any dealer contribution or low finance so 330d it is for me.

I got that from some dealers when I went to order the touring 330D, my local dealer said it was a new model so there weren't any discounts, another dealer was happy to give the same discount as other models!

If you are dead set on a 335d, shop around - don't take one dealer's word for it.

Mind, I'd still have a drive in a 335d first if you decide to go for one.... all this talk of the xdrive high ride height is off-putting.

I'm not bothered about the cosmetic difference. Only you lot would ever notice anyway

They are shipping over from another dealer an adaptive car so I can have one more drive of non adaptive/adaptive before I make the final call.

But think it's now more than likely with deal on 335d I'll take it (assuming I sell a car in the company for what I think it'll go for).

As always, dealer has been brilliant (one of main reasons I've stuck with BMW and Mini)

I didnt mean the cosmetic difference. A Lowered car will handle better than a higher car. Centre of gravity and all that

Ahh! Yes well my opinion on the adaptive x-Drive has already been flamed so not going over all that again. But I think my final thought process boiled down to if I was going to have the 330D, I'd have taken 2 wheel drive car with adaptive. 335D I have no choice but x-Drive and absolutely no question I will add adaptive (following testing both last week). I just want one last drive to ensure that I'm happy with that set up.

Luckily I have an understanding dealer that's willing to go out of way to let me try all the combos. I think they are also quite interested in my findings as no-one has actually tried them all back-to-back.

So yes I'll be ending up with a corrupted handling car but hell, I'm sure I'll manage somehow :-)

For everyday use, IMO you will not notice much difference, however if you are a "driving enthusiast" you will.

Agree. I wonder if they are reserving this for the 435D or will there be a 340D?????

Annoyingly the 535d (same engine) does have the two separate exhausts. No idea why they couldn't do it for the 335d.

Maybe it's coz the x drive gets in the way so they'll do it for the 335d s drive

It's to do with emissions so I've heard... Apparently something to do with Euro 6, the 535d was type approved in 2009 so can have the separate pipes...

I don't understand why they've released the F30 version, but not the F31 version. Looks like I'll have to settle for 330xd....
