F30 335d xDrive M Sport - Delivered & Reviewed

Picked up my F30 335d XDrive M-Sport yesterday. It looked absolutely fabulous hen they took the cover off it. The spec is:-

Mineral Grey
Dakota Black Leather
Aluminium Hexagon Trim
Sports electric seats - Heated
Professional Media
Visibility Package
Folding Door Mirrors
Sun Protection Glass
Adaptive M Sport suspension
Comfort Access
Surround View
M Performance Parts including 20" Rims

Now I drive an F10 M5 so this had to go along way not to disappoint and it certainly didn't. It does sit marginally higher than non x drive cars, but see from the pictures its not that high as most of us feared. Turned the key and the engine has a deep growl that is a lot more noticeable than the F30 330d I had on 24 hour test. Gear stick is different too as its not that thin type. Slotted it into drive and off I went with a big smile.

I floored it on the road outside and the power was just there from low revs and it just kept coming. The torque was immense and it compares favourably to the M5 in that the horizon rapiudly heads towards you. Before you know it you are on the brakes. The brakes are also very good with large discs on the front. Took it for a spin on A roads and motorway and the ride was excellent. In sport plus mode with TC deactivated it is rock solid and the engine feels perky, not wallowy like 330d. It doesn't feel a heavy car and you can throw it into corners and it grips with minimal roll.

Changing through the gears with the paddleshift is very smooth. I haven't used launch control yet as not really needed it.

Interior is very good, seats are comforatble and supportive and hold you very well. Steering is well weighted and the wheel feels nice and chunky. The iDrive controller is now the one with the mouse pad on the top. Basically when using the nav to input address you can just write the letters on it and it does handwriting recognition to input the character instead of spinning to the letters - how cool is that!!

Its not an M car but it can hold its own on the road compared to 99% of the cars out there. It is light and agile, the big engine doesn't make it feel nose heavy and the 4wd is not noticeable. All in all it is fabulous.

Negatives - none yet (maybe 20" rims leave your teeth shaking if you hit a pot hole or drain cover!!!)

Let me know if anyone wants info on a specific item or pictures.

Really pleased you're happy with it. Looks superb (well I would say that, I've gone for MG too!). Have me quite tempted over those 20" as dealer has a set needing a new home but think I should keep my sensible hat on and stick with 19's.

Interesting it's a different gearstick - wonder if that's the case for all 2014 MY cars.

Thanks for posting up. 19 sleeps to go....

How long did you wait on delivery in the end? I only ordered last Thursday so I've got a wait yet but cannot wait to get it. That looks awesome and glad to hear your really happy with it.

Oh one other question. On my E90 330d you cannot actually just floor it from standing as there's too much torque and the traction control just rains it in so much a Fiesta would probably beat you off the lights. So it's a case of getting it rolling first a bit before giving it the beans. Hopefully the xDrive solves that issue or at least improves on it no end. Have you tried flooring it or close to flooring it from standing or does it still feel like there's too much torque that it'll cut the power somewhat? 730NM is a damn lot of it

Not my idea of how to break-in a new car/engine, unless it's someone else's

When I change my 330d next year I was hoping that the 335d would have the two single pipes rather than the single twin. Shame that BMW didnt do this on the F3x's

I ordered in mid June and it was delivered to dealer in mid July. Initially I was told it would be September, but somehow the dealer got me a really early build slot.

Power delivery from start does cause spin on loose surface, otherwise it just grips and goes. Dealer said that you don't need to run it in like an M car, just go. I've got it on lease with maintenance for 2 years so not really too fussed about treating it gently!!!

Not really as its a lease car with maintenance. Asked dealer about running in and he said its not like M cars where you are limited to 4k revs for first 1,000-1,500 miles.

with tolerances these days on the liners, you dont really need a run in period. In fact, the occasional full throttle (few secs) when warm followed by the overrun period actually helps to bed the liners in by causing the piston rings to be fully expanded against the liner walls. Its the partial vacuum above the piston on the overrun that helps exhaust any microscopic liner material if any.

enjoy the car, looks great but would love a 335d RWD

The 20's are a bit unforgiving when you hit a pot hole or recessed drain cover. They do look damned good though

It's the leased / company car rule... "Drive it like it's stolen". Lol

But yes I only asked because he mentioned that he floored it as he left the dealers so clearly wasn't going for an easy run in

That was a quick turn around in getting it built and delivered.

Yeah I'd expect some slippage on loose surface but on reasonable tarmac if it just shoots off that's got to really push you back into your seat

When I had my E90 330d the manual clearly talked about a run in period near the front. I've got the PDF for the F30 328i / 335i off the net (Not found others) and I cannot see it mention a run in period in it. I'll probably take it a bit easier anyway as I'm thinking of buying this one at the end but I'll be dying to just floor it to check the re-entry heat plates don't burn up

Looking good. Those wheels look the business

I'm relieved to see the height issue of the Xdrive doesn't seem too big an issue, that was the one thing that had been playing on my mind a bit so it is quite a relief.

I called into the dealership today to sign the paperwork and on their visualiser toy they have the exhaust pipes were either side of the car like on the 335i and they wouldn't believe me when I said I thought it was both on the one side so it seems your photo confirms I may have been right after all?

I had a go with the new iDrive touch control too on the general managers new 5 series and it is a lot larger than the current one I have. The drawing of letters and numbers is great and surprisingly good at recognising what was scribbled.

Top car

Looks and sounds like fantastic car, very nice indeed. Its interesting you dont appear to see it as too much of a "come down" after the M5.

Only thing I'm not keen on is them xdrive badges. I think they would have to go if it was me. . Apart from that, looks the business.

I've gone debadged so I'll blend in with the pack in my Estoril Blue car... Oh hang on

Though I'll enjoy passing some RWD BMW's in the snow if /when that happens and them wondering why my car is having much less issue with it all. Obviously not if they have winter tires but we all know most people don't get them.

Really lad to hear the positive review on the ride height, handling general power delivery. Unfortunately I've another 4 weeks to wait for mine!

Performance kit and wheels look great too, I'm still debating the front splitter and side skirt sticker graphic, but its all orderd so just need to see closer to the time. I see that yours is all unpainted... Do you mind saying how much you paint for fitting? My dealer is suggesting an approved body shop to do the work, but I'd like some benchmark before I speak to them.

Good luck with it!
