Thumbs up OT. Golf 7R driven. Sublime. Mini Review of my Red Golf 7R + Golf 7R vs 330d M Sport

On my way home after picking up my perfectly re-sprayed F30, I decided to drop into VW and test drive a Golf R with DSG. I had made an advanced booking. Well what can I say.

The car is mental. It just handles beautifully and its acceleration is truly mind blowing. In track mode it felt like a Tornado jet would feel. I had a bit of a shock with the acceleration and I was amazed by the grip and handling.
The engine is sublime and the DSG gearbox quite superb. In comfort mode the ride was totally composed and superbly flat and the handling was still superb. There was a distinct lack of road roar and there was no wind noise.

I did not once feel I was driving a non premium car as it was beautifully put together and the style of the whole car was just what the doctor ordered. I loved the design of the inside and the delightful little touches which made it so special. The seats were supremely comfortable and it was very space efficient. Everything worked to perfection and was so easy to manipulate. Lots of room for such a smallish car. The only downside is the rather smaller boot due the 4WD. But it has a spare space saver tyre. One bad point: the CD slot is in the Glove Box!

So I have made the right choice in downsizing from my beautiful and wonderful F30 which I still think is the most beautiful car I have owned.

Glad you enjoyed it. Always nice to hear when someone has that moment of driving nirvana, even if they are a deserter!

Very very impressed when I tried one. Just couldn't quite justify getting one for my wife to go alongside the 335d...

Don't make me feel even worse than I feel about changing my F30. I love it so much and will miss it horribly. I just need a smaller car and a very fast one. The Golf R fits perfectly. It will never have the cachet of an F30, but as I am a pensioner now, it should suit my downgraded image perfectly.

I'll still post on this forum if you guys don't mind. Please don't make me an orphan.

Of course not, always welcome, especially now you drive an xdrive! Though an xdrive with a FWD bias!

I take it you're on 18's? After thinking you were mad the whole time you hated the 403s vs 400s, even being a big wheel Charlie I cannot get over how much better the 18" golf r wheels look over the 19s. I almost bought a golf r before I ordered my f30 and the 18's were a no brainier in my mind.

When I test drove the car, I took it out and he asked me if I wanted him to drive it or would I be happy flooring it?. I needless to say said 'meh' and floored it, and holy fuck it felt fast.

The sales guy then said 'put it in sport and try again'. Wow, straight line acceleration was immense. Little pops on up change and overrun on down change made me smile too. I did really love that car.

The only thing I'm not 100% in agreement on is the premium feel. But I have been in a lot of vw's and it felt too familiar. Don't get me wrong it was a nice place to be, but the S3 I drove was much much nicer inside (but horrible apart from that, golf better in every other way IMO)

Cracking deal you have indeed. Good stuff.

Glad you enjoyed the drive in the Golf R, F30AM.
Now you'll finally have a car that's as fast as a 335d.

Glad you enjoyed it and its the one for you. I test drove a lovely blue one but just wasn't feeling the drive. Some nice touches though like the flat bottomed steering wheel and the illuminated door inserts. Tornado Red is nice, sets off well against the grey wing mirrors.

I drove one too and although very impressed with the drive, there were a few things that put me off.

As a day-2-day I feel that if you were to have kids or adults in the back it would feel cramped and storage space in the boot for luggage and shopping etc. is pretty poor, especially if you play the game of golf.

The salesman explained that CD's are 'old technology' so that's why the slot is in the glovebox. This didn't impress the wife!

Plus the dealers are a little - I don't know who to say this - but strange. They accused a friend of mine of 'clocking her' 4 year old A3 quottro as it only had 18,000 miles on it.

May have been a one off, but the whole experience put me off the VW brand. Almost made me feel dirty!!

Thanks everyone.

Looking at my shiny F30 today brought a tear to my eye. I thought 'What have I done?'

But then when I had to re-park it due to some congestion on my street, I had to find a spot quite far away.

Yes, the F30 is so beautiful to drive and look at and the Golf R is not a Premium car and is a box, but it is beautifully made and very easy to find a parking place for.

I will miss my BMW Dealer who has been stellar. The VW Dealer is well known to me. I know all the guys in their service and parts dept. The whole West London VW Operation is moving into a massive new building at the Chiswick Roundabout within a year. It will be VW's Flagship store. West London VW is part of the Inchcape Group which is where my Golf R will come from.

I have ordered the R, but I don't know whether I can give up my F30 completely. Lots to think about. I feel a bit sad today.

Went to VW again and compared the inside of the R with my F30 whilst they were side by side. The inside of the R is jewel like and I was hugely impressed. Should I say that I love it a bit more? I am now sure I have made the right choice and any doubts have been completely dispelled.

I notice you haven't commented on the single biggest upgrade in moving to the Golf R.

You will no longer be filling up with the fuel of Satan.....

Don't forget the Golf R needs premium juice!

When is delivery?

Yes, a petrol engine is very smooth. But it is a 4 cyl one in the R. I like them both. BMW's 6 cyl Diesels are superb, no doubt. And I am not being diplomatic!

I will admit that I prefer the R interior. Dare I say it, the R's interior seems more premium to me than the F30's interior. It has a jewel like quality which is sadly missing from the F30. The R is a fabulous car, no doubt.

It is so beautifully put together. There is a jewel like quality to everything and the fit and finish beats the F30's. It even looks prettier to these eyes. The seats are truly sublime.

Arrives in Sept. But I am away a lot of the time and have asked for delivery late Dec. They have agreed. They will keep it covered up. I will go and check anyway.

I've put my order in for the Golf R today to replace my current company car - Merc e class can

Will run this alongside our 335d

Was initially going for a fiesta or something cheap but had a bit of budget creep

Golf Has similar performance to the BM but feels quicker round the bends etc
