The less work the better, I'm not sure I really see the point of it really.

Slightly non related question as posters on this thread seem knowledgable

I have HK audio, very happy with it on the whole but sometimes would like a bit lower freq bass available, can you simply upgrade the subs under the seat to achieve this, maintaining everything else as standard?

The woofer upgrade to the Gladen units is plug-compatible size wise (although it seems requires some cutting/prising out of sealing), but I'm not sure what the sound/amp-driving compatibility would be to the HK setup. The Mosconi upgrade drives the subs from the additional 2 amp channels. I don't know whether that's the strategy with the HK, or whether it simply uses 2 channels plus a crossover. I'd guess the latter, but it's only a guess. If that's the case then I'd doubt the Gladens would offer any real benefit. However, you'd need to try it to know for sure..

Just finished my upgrade. Night and day difference in sound quality. Well worth the £700 and skinned knuckles!

Nice one!!! I'm going to leave mine until my man-flu has gone and I can hear properly again. So I can hear the base speakers before I upgrade.

Is it silly to only upgrade to gladen 201 speakers? Without new amp

Us spec bmw professional hifi 8 speakers.

By the sounds of it they work pretty well with thr standard UK base system (no amp, 6 speakers) so they should sound even better with your HIFI system.

Hello,

I got some questions:

1. Why did you use a 2channel quadlock instead of 4channel?
2. Do the rear speakers (which were not replaced) still work?
3. Are the rear speakers also powered by the amp?
4. Do you have any problems similar to those with the alpine retrofit that for example PDC is very quiet after the speaker modification?

Regards

Hi, i can answer most of this for Dave

1. Because it's a 4 channel amp used to power the front door speakers & underseat woofers, so it only needs 2 inputs (FL & FR)
2. Rear speakers still run off the HU amp.
3. See above
4. The rears will be same as before, Dave never reported any problems with the front PDC either.

okay thanks.

As far as I'm concerned the problem with rear speakers is connected with the fact that when installing the alpine retrofit kit you need to code the car to HIFI settings.

As I understand, here you don't have to perform any coding??

Regards

Another question - The underseat woofers are connected directly to the Mosconi AMP. Am I correct? The stock wires for underseat woofers remain unused. Yes?

Correct no coding.

2 outputs from amp go direct to woofers, other two go to the outer connectors on the woofer plug which feed the door speakers by the looks of it.

Sorry, but I don't get what U mean by: "other two go to the outer connectors on the woofer plug which feed the door speakers by the looks of it"?

I would like to confirm:

- I connect the quadlock to the amp
- I connect underseat woofers directly to the amp
- I connect the amp to power

that's all?

If you look at the original woofer connector it had 4 wires, 2 thick ones come from the head unit , then the 2 thin ones go to the door speakers afaik.

So you need to use those thin wires to feed the door speakers by connecting the new amp to them.

i think teaston has answered your questions pretty comprehensively.

just to add to the general PDC issues that the 'hifi' (U.S.) upgraders had.
was because the rear PDC output comes from the rear speakers iirc. (not sure about front PDC i haven't got it)
and the rears on a 'hifi' system were amped.
since i'm only amping the front outputs and subs, not the rears, PDC volume isn't an issue.

but...the door gongs are amped, and need turning down in the idrive settings.(think mine are on one 'bar'.)
also if you get traffic reports on the radio, it can be very loud, and can make you jump if your not prepared.
(though i think you can turn the volume of the traffic reports down too?)

I do not use radio traffic reports, but I have RealTimeTrafficInformation which I think is not an issue as it only draws some colorful lines on navigation indicating the actual traffic on a specific road

So having in mind all the above, you confirm that you did not experience any inconvieniences after the speaker upgrade?

When I first had my retrofit the PDC front and rear was extremely loud even on lowest idrive setting. Caused by setting the amp with lower gain and higher input level. Swapping this round on the sound processor settings fixed it back (still needed lowest drive setting due to the higher power of the Hertz Amp)

My rear speakers are not amplified so PDC can't be coming via them alone.

with just rear pdc and the base un amped speaker set i have absolutely no problems at all.
the speakers do need bedding in for a while when first fitted.
especially the subs as they tend to distort at high output a bit, until nicely loosened up.
utterly amazing after that it's not just the volume or the extra bass, the difference in the clarity is night and day.

also i followed the setup guide for setting the amps gain settings, pretty straight forward really,
as they have 'pink noise' wav files to set the maximum gain for the amp.
and leds illuminate when the max has been reached you then just dial it back a little.
then i used the downloaded .gas file from monster audio to set the amp up.

Well, I have installed the speaker set, but what I have done was just changing the midrange in doors, and adding the tweeters. I did not install the underseat subs and I did not install the mosconi amp.

Why I did so?

Because the quality improved substantially, and the overall "loudness" also increased. There was no reason for me to pay additional money for mosconi amp and other accesoriess to install new subs.

On the other hand, it is good to know that Professional Navigation is capable to work with new gladen midrange speakers and tweeters without amplifier.

All in all, I have two gladen plug and play underseat subs for sale, also monster cables and gladen power cables (for amp). If anyone interested please PM me.
