will the f3x models be following the 35mpg minimum law that just passed alittle while back? i can't remember if this is effective in 2012, 2013, etc...

They will certainly try their best to bump MPG as much as they can. Weren't turbo 4's rumored for the F3x generation? We'll probably see more diesels and hybrids coming to the US market as well.

If they can't meet the CAFE levels, they will just have to pay fines. BMW doesn't even meet the current CAFE requirement and pays millions in fines to the government every year.

Remember, the 35mpg is a "corporate average", so BMW will have to meet it - as an average - across all model lines. Given the number of thirsty 5ers and 7ers, they will have to sell quite a few high mileage 3ers and 1ers to make the average (including diesels). Given the sales of the 3ers, BMW will have quite an incentive to make them thrifty. BMW and some others don't have a "Prius" to help them out.

new milage rules come into effect in 2016. While company average is 35 mpg, there is a different standard for different sized cars. 3 series likely needs to average better than 35mpg. How do they do that? More diesel, hybrid and small engine versions (like the 320d or the 323 we have in Canada). They will also have to increase the markup on larger engine cars (335?), charge an internal tax. The effect will be that the faster car owners will end up subsidizing the slower car owners.
