Auto-dimming exterior mirrors

Is there any way to check if I really received these on my car?

Thing is, I had this on my X5 and compared to that car, and compared to my interior mirror, it is almost as if my exterior mirrors are not dimming at all. The lights are brighter and it does not appear as if there is a layer on top of my exterior mirrors like the interior has (you can see this at night because the middle of the mirror is darker than the outer edges).

The auto-dimming exteriors mirrors are only in combination with the auto-folding exterior mirrors.
So, if you have the folding mirrors, you have the dimming mirrors.

You sure that's true for American builds? Also this is the first time I've heard that the F30 has folding side mirrors.

The folding mirrors exist (I ordered them), they already existed on the E90... at least for the European market.
Are you saying this isn't an option in the US?

If you order the Premium Package in the US, then you get the auto dimming interior and exterior mirrors. I believe it comes with the auto fold function also.

Yeah I have the premium and folding mirrors (btw, they're not 'auto'-folding, none of the F30's (at least in the US) have auto-folding, you'll have to press a button on the armrest in the door).. it's just not apparent to me that they are also dimmed at night, it looks just like regular mirrors to me at night.. doesn't seem as dimmed as my X5 did or as my interior mirror :S

With my X5, and on the interior on my F30, the mirrors look like they have a bit of greenish tint (dunno else how to explain it) with a small edge on the side that seems to be the regular mirror (hence the idea of a film over the mirror). My F30 exterior mirrors seem not to have this and I wonder if others have the same or if I should check with my dealership.

doesn't auto mean they fold by themselves, i.e. the button? i've had manual ones where you fold them by pushing in.

lol maybe.. I figured it would be more like what you see with some other cars, a setting to have them automatically fold in by themselves when you lock the car

I know the F30 has them because I tried to adjust the mirrors before taking the car out at the Drive for Team USA event. For the first 2-3 times, I kept folding them in. I guess that counts as an adjustment, right?

My exterior mirrors are definitely not dimming, but the inside one does.

Hmm... maybe it was the specific situation. I was being followed by a dump truck and he was lighting up the rear window, but I noticed that the inside rear view mirror was definitely dimmed, i.e. was in fact dim, low contrast and had a silghtly greenish tinge. I looked into the left rear view mirror and was instantly blinded by the guy's lights.

Either (1) they're not working properly, (2) the situation didn't fall within the system's parameters, i.e. wrong angle or intensity or (3) I actually didn't get this option even though it's supposed to be part of the Premium package.

say, for the usa market, the only way to get electric folding mirrors is through buying the premium package right, you can't just get it by itself or through any other package.

This is exactly what I meant. They're advertising dimmed exterior mirrors and I hate the fact that I am currently always blinded at night by other cars (no matter what angle, intensity or distance) :/

Perhaps E90Fleet has any idea how we can check ourselves if we received dimming mirrors or not?

If it is like the E90 you can put a bright light on the interior mirror to make it dim, then you can see that the external mirrors do the same (they are controlled by the interior mirror) and there is a non-dimming border on the mirrors that clearly shows when they are dimmed down.

Yeah that's the thing, the exterior mirrors should do that but I haven't seen them do this at all so far

I noticed the same exact thing in the F30. I had an E90 and E92 in the past and I had the autodimming w the premium package in all of them and when the interior mirror sensor detects any high beams it would dimm all mirrors (interior and exterior) instantly, in the F30 however, this is not the case, I noticed that the interior mirror would dim but the exterior mirrors would not, I thought initially that it's a defect then I noticed that the interior mirror would dim then the exterior mirrors would too but only when the car coming from behind you get closer to you to a certain level, it has to be fairly close to u for them to dim, I thought maybe in this model they modified it to function like that given the interior mirror would blind u regardless u r looking in it or not but you have to look in the exterior mirrors to get blinded, just a thought.

That's an idea, Xenonx.. I think I'll test tonight with my own and my wife's car to see if it makes any difference as to how close the car behind me is
