so tonight i was able to experience the F30 in the dark. 2 things i learned:

1. the interior has 2 soft white overhead dome lights. my '09 Z4 and my wife's '11 X5 have those old fashioned bulbs that illuminate that ugly yellowish color. the F30 has white LEDs in the drive&passenger dome/reading lights and the same set in the rear. super cool!

2. a bunch of people have been asking about the ambient light. i went into iDrive->Settings->Lighting, and there was 2 modes:

• classic = LEDs illuminate in BMW amber
• sport = LEDs illuminate in clean white light

i can't wait to take delivery on this beast!!

sorry no pics. i doubt my iPhone 4S would have captured it properly. it was most obvious with the orange light that comes from those tiny LEDs to illuminate the shifter area....they turned from amber to white when i was playing with iDrive. i think the doors did too, but i can't confirm that.

basically the germans finally caught up and have white LEDs in the car now. the dash is still all amber, the A/C, gauges, etc.

i also love the HUD, when you are changing the radio/Sirius it displays in the windshield, so cool!

Hehe true, I doubt a phone could capture it at night. Kind of curious how it looks like, even though I can get an idea when thinking of the amber lights in my own car

yay interior LEDs! About time since MB and Lexus has had them in the C-class and IS for years.

huh? pretty sure bmw was the first wit led's near the moonroof controls, been there for like 20 years...

really??? why does all the aftermarket companies sell white LEDs interior lights for BMW and make a fortune? have you seen the LED light in the F30, much different then any BMW I have been in. and i have 2 cars of a higher class BMW (X5 and Z4) and both are nasty yellow old fashioned bulbs??

If you mean white, then it's no wonder because the old ones were all in amber.

I too have a X5 but in mine there are LED's in the roof, at the door handles and lots of other places but all in amber, not white and no bulbs either

sorry let me clarify my statement - the yellow nasty old fashioned bulbs I am referring to are the dome and reading lights front and rear. in the F30 they are clean soft white LED light.

see nasty yellow dome/reading lights in my 2011 X5, this is GONE in the F30. does everyone understand now???

Still waiting to see ambient light in the F30 in action. I would love a F10-like ambient lighting in the F30

How exactly does the ambient lighting work? And when? I played with mine the other night but couldn't seem to get anything to work unless I turned the interior light on on the overhead console? Is that it?

Did you notice the LEDs under the door handles that light up the ground?

Check idrive settings to make sure ambient lighting is on, they should activate with headlight usage, just look at the b pillar side airbag, there's a sconce-like uplight effect that appears the brightest out of all the ambient lights which include a strip of lights in the door panel and a couple spots next to the overhead light buttons to light up the center console.
