I was doing a little more reading on this and found some similar discussions here when the last M5 engine was released. From what I read it looks like even though the EPA certification may be done on the 340i, the car cannot be released until the California CARB certification is done. This applies even to non-California cars since these are "50 state" cars apparently. So I think we are waiting on a CARB certification to get the EPA hold released.

Here is some info on the CARB process, and here is the CARB page showing 2016 MY certifications that was last updated August 19. If you look down the list, the last BMW updates were late July, and none of them look like the 340i engine (at least not that I can make out).

Edit: If you scroll to the very last page of each PDF it shows the actual car model like 535i etc. I went through them all and there is no 340i approval among those PDFs.
Interesting... Had an unusual discussion with a BMW NA rep on the hotline the other day, and I wonder if this explains it. My car was supposed to be week 34, and has been 112 for about a month now. When I talked to the rep, she sounded very confused--said she didn't know why my car wasn't in production, and that it wasn't even showing an estimated build week anymore, but there were no notes in the file explaining anything.

My theory: there are too many 340s in port in the US waiting on emissions, so they're delaying additional US-bound 340s until the backlog is cleared.

That is interesting. It looks like the first 340's started hitting US ports 22 days ago, and the backlog can affect the supply chain and production management schedules. It stinks that deliveries in the other 49 states are affected (if CARB is the hold up), but BMW's sold in the US are built to meet EPA and CARB standards. And, some of us will probably miss the Drive for Team USA $1,000 credit (mine expires on Aug. 27th, my car was originally supposed to be at the dealer on Aug. 20-21st).

You can ask to sign the paperwork now before your credit expires. That's what I would do if I wanted the car after confirming with BMW Genius/Dealer no damage during shipping.

Thumbs up

Per CA, the US VPC hold on 340's should end on Tues. Aug 25th, as it sounds like they anticipate final CARB approval on Monday the 24th.

Good to know and hope this happens. Planning on picking up my car on 08/29 and it would be great if the dealership receives the car in time.

Still waiting on mine. Looks like it arrived in the US on 8/21. It now says "finishing touches"

Dan W, let us know if you receive any updates from your CA.
I'll be checking with mine today as well to see if he has any updates.

Hallelujah!

Not coincidentally, I heard from my CA today that the Performance Center is able to schedule delivery anytime after September 8 (two weeks).

Great!! Looks like the waiting finally comes to an end.

I am reaching out to my CA to figure out the estimated dealer delivery time as well:-)

[Update] Just called the BMW NA #800. Was told my vehicle had been released to the carrier (yet left the VPC though)! The estimate dealer delivery time is tomorrow (08/26).

Considering my dealership is about 4.5 hrs away from VPC, I think there could be a good chance for my dealer to receive it tomorrow as scheduled!

Will update when I have more info.

Just spoke to a rep at BMW NA #800 and I guess my car was scheduled for production yesterday with an estimated completion date early next week. Thinking my theory was right, and now things should start flowing. Hopefully they'll work to clear the backlog quickly and everyone should start seeing their 340s soon!

If you don't mind me asking, when did your car complete production? My CA forwarded me an email this morning stating the earliest PCD date was 10/21. My 340 just completed production on 8/21. I asked about redirecting to the local dealer and was told that it would be "a couple of weeks" from it hitting port, which I find hard to believe. At that rate, I should just wait for PCD. Decisions, decisions....

Mine completed production on July 31. Arrived in Charleston on August 16. Your timeline doesn't add up; after production, it's typically a few days to Bremerhaven, then 2 weeks voyage, and 2 weeks for PC shipment/prep. Unless you've got a SA build, which I could see adding a couple more weeks.

I just finalized plans for PCD on 9/8!

I'll be signing paperwork on the first; keeping fingers crossed that the September lease numbers improve!

I know, right? It's a Germany build....I read too many SA horror stories regarding delivery. Guess I will call BMW NA again. Thanks for letting me know your timeline!

My 340I in production now. Not happy my BMW drive money ($1000) expires 10/4.
Way it seems no way I'll get the cash.

Why not? There's six weeks until then; that should be plenty of time for delivery, bearing in mind you can probably do the paperwork up to a week earlier (extra buffer).
