Vanos cold start fail after timing chain
I recently purchased a 328i and after some research, i opted for a timing chain replacement. I finished up last weekend and everything on the car worked fine, except that I immediately got codes 131501 and 131401 with limp mode. I doubt both actuators failed while I was swapping the chain, so what other issues can I look for to determine the cause.
I replaced the chain and all the components and used the special tools. I checked timing multiple times during reassembly by cranking the motor and checking with the camshaft tools. I am going to pull the valve cover again tomorrow and check again. Car otherwise starts runs and drivers fine. RPM idle in target range |

Took off the valve cover, double checked timing and everything is still in spec. Removed and cleaned solenoids, bench tested actuators. They are all working. Still failing cold start test

I doubt this would work but you could try resetting the adaptation values and specifically the vanos adaptation, they might be off since you replaced the timing chain. The way I do it is through ista, and I think bm3 also allows you to do it.

You can use either Esys (more difficult) or ISTA+ ($10 ENET cable for both) to reset the adaptation values. Some transmission and engine (DME) adaptation values can be reset by a combination of gas pedal, brake pedal, ignition, etc....do a google search.
If you go that deep into your engine, you should have ESys and ISTA+ anyways. The sub-forums have threads where you get access to the download links. Get ISTA+ "standalone" version and follow carefully the install steps. For ESys you do not need tokens as long as you do not FDL code. ENET cable is on eBay and Amazon.
