Thumbs up Autocar: Alpina D4 Biturbo driven

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
The D4 Biturbo is Alpina's follow up to the stunning D3. It's capable of reaching 60mph in 4.6 seconds and can return up to 53mpg. Sounds like the perfect package, then, but are there any drawbacks? Steve Sutcliffe finds out.

I think the fuel prices are set to discourage US consumers buying diesels at a rate that would encourage manufacturers from bringing more options. I have a 2009 X5d and love it. For most of my ownership the price of diesel in my area hovered around the price of premium unleaded, maybe 10 cents a gallon more. I filled up yesterday and is was 60 cents a gallon more. Less refining required and they reem the consumer like that! And they do that while pushing higher CAFE requirements and ramming ethanol down our throats which just lowers fuel economy.

Enough ranting. Back to the regularly scheduled discussion.... Yes this car would be awesome!

Where are you, where I am ever since i got the diesel this year I have been paying a bit less than the premium I pay for my F30. I filled up my diesel for around $60 for about 20 gallons the other day.

I would take the M4! Alpina D4 is more like a Gt car, fast and relaxing for long trips, but not as raw as an M4

I was cringing the whole time at the low profile tires. I can't believe he didn't damage the rims.

Excellent, excellent car and all around package.

The more I look at the Alpina stuffs, the more I like the "luxury line"
I think the luxury line is the best looking model for the 3er and 4er.
No wonder Alpina took this version, great looking car.

Personally would take the D3/D4 over a M3/M4.

Don't mate. there is no substitute for a petrol engine sound. Granted bmw´s petrol engines are one of the worst sounding in the business (specially at idle) but still better than the diesel´s - those for sure the worse. I dont care much for torque - AMG does that better anyways - and a sports car with a diesel clatter?? no thanks. Thats like getting an armani suit with flip flops.

Why can't you buy one and have it shipped over here to the U.S.?

Every time Alpina are mentioned, the US customers want them. Why not just open one west coast dealership and one east? It's not like we have many in the UK (unfortunately).

I'd say due to the lack of knowledge from the general public as to what Alpina is, they would fair best to partner with an existing BMW dealership in West/East.
I love the product Alpina produces. I can see exactly what they strive for, and from the lip to the wheels, it just appeals to me inside and out.
And I agree, it makes no sense to compare this to an M3/4 for anything more than a reference for those of us who won't see this in our market. Completely different purpose, and Alpinas end goal is not to one up the M.
