Nav only avaliable with the heads up

Hi Guys,

Upon reading the spec option sheet, I learned the Navigation on a 335i is only avaliable with the Heads Up display?

I dislike the reflection the heads up gives you when its not sunny and you are not wearing polorized glasses.

Can anyone confirm if this is true?

Is the HUD always on, or can you turn it off or at least turn the intensity way down?

I have the HUD in the F10 535i. I'm going to assume it will be similar to the one in the F30. The good news is I don't really have any 'glare' problems with the HUD. There is a light sensor which changes the intensity of the display automatically depending on sun conditions and it does a very nice job.

However, you will see an outline of the whole assembly on your windshield when you drive into the sun. There's nothing you can do about that. HUD on or off won't matter, it's a reflection of the dash. In the F10, you can see the reflection whether you have the HUD option or not because the dash is the same on HUD or non-HUD cars. It's somewhat annoying.

I rarely see any light leakage on the windshield from the HUD itself. It has to be very dark and even then, the leakage is very slight. There is a brightness control in the iDrive for the HUD. And there is a button that allows you to turn it completely off.

I enjoy the HUD option. You never have to look down at your gauges to see how fast you are going ever again.

Thanks, you explained it perfectly... the sun reflects the HUD module on the windshield and that is what i am talking about. very distractive during the day when its not in use.

I just dont understand why nav is not a stand alone option...

Ive never had an issue with HUD and a sun reflection in 3+years of ownership, so I dont see it as an issue at all.

Once you use HUD, you'll never want to drive without it, and in the tandem wit the Nav, you get the directions and popups in front of you, so its a natural fit for HUD and Nav to work together. For the extract $$ for both items, its worth it for sure

Same reason BMWNA decided not to offer the sports suspension or sports seats as standalone options (only available on Sports Line) it is called CASH... bundling makes the avg. price per unit go up.

Most people opt for nav in luxury cars these days- now in the F30 those people are forced into dropping money on options they wouldn't have bought if they want Nav.

It is short sighted as some will just walk away and take money elsewhere or not get nav and leave the brand. BMWNA will need to rethink this when the Cadillac ATS hits as it will be much cheaper. The ATS-V will cost the same as a 335i, as well as the increased competition from MB.

The HUD is useless to me in summer bc I am supposed to wear polarized glasses (issues with floaters and sun spots) and that kills it, the rest of the year it is fantastic.

Not that bad if you think about it.

Original nav always been like $2100.

It will come out as stand alone option in the future, dont worry

By wearing certain polarized glasses, you're effectively cancelling out most of the reflected light(the display) coming to you. There are some ways around it, like your head/glasses orientation relative to the hud, and there are some brands/lenses where the polarization is aligned in a way that doesn't cancel out the HUD. It all depends on whether the display and your glasses are polarized in the same direction or not, which usually it will be because most glasses are polarized along the same axis.

A quick tip is to find transparency film and apply it to the hud(also works on radio displays and nav screens if you have trouble seeing those as well. This rotates the polarization angle 90 degrees so it will be in step with your glasses and therefore you wont cancel out the reflection.

Read this to understand the science behind it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polarizer
Thanks for the explanation. I'm familiar with the polarization process for sunglasses, but didn't realize the HUD relies on the same concept. Some polarized glasses make the radio screen in non-iDrive cars unreadable, and the transparency film fix works well for that. Never would have thought to apply the same concept to the HUD.

I have one pair of polarized sunglasses. When I'm wearing them, the HUD is almost unreadable in my 535i. But if I turn my head a little to the side, the HUD shows up much brighter. Most of the time, I don't use those glasses. But when I do, I definitely notice the issue!

Hi I Bimmer... do you get a metallic reflection from the sun on the projector during the day?

I just found the 550i Heads up to be distracting, maybe its different now? I hear the heads up improved a little bit.
