Dent on the rim and how to repair it...
Hi all,
I got a small dent (chipped) on the rear right side rim while trying to get out of a parking and i hit the curb... it is not big, but because the edge is dented/slightly chipped, it is now turning black so it is visible... Is there a way to repair rims like this? can anyone recommend something that doesn't drain wallets? Or should I take it to BMW Service? My issue is rather cosmetic than anything else... in the pics you can see that they side of the tire is also gone... Last edited by Shaw; 10-27-2014 at 10:06 AM.. |

I had two wheels repaired at a dealer for around 125/wheel. They just contract the work out to some guy who comes in once a week. This should be your upper bound in price.
Random related rant - sometimes I'm finding I prefer to go to the dealer who I know will do a good job and will have the $$ to fix things should they do something wrong. Recent example - needed to have my winter tires dismounted and moved onto another set of wheels + balanced. Went to bell tire where they have a road force balancer - pretty good price too. Well, I end up waiting 3 hrs while they don't even do the job, then finally rush it as they're closing, throwing and banging the wheels all around and got my tire totes absolutely covered in sh*t. Offered to waive the dismounting fee (which was like $30), but still...what I am I gonna do, yell at the clerk at bell tire and threaten to take business elsewhere? They don't give 2 sh*ts. Moral of the story is - performance shop and dealer are the only people I'll deal with directly, even if it's costing an extra couple bucks. |

I don't have a dremmel...and never done this before...chances that I create a bigger pithole are much higher than solving this...

Just check out a few videos on Youtube and do it yourself. For minor damage like that it isn't difficult. I have done small repairs on my own rims with damage similar to yours and they don't look too bad.

That's a pretty small ding for $100. I'd buy the dremmel and then have the tool for whatever down the road. Or borrow one from a friend. A dremmel with a cord shouldn't be that expensive FWIW.

You don't need a Dremel for that. Some proper sandpaper, some filler (can't recall what I used but available at crappy tire) and some spray paint is all you need.

Not sure how you guys plan on using a Dremel to fix that? You have to sand to provide a bonding surface, then fill with Bondo or something equivalent, sand to smooth, then paint and clear coat with some cans. You will need to dismount the tire first. It's kind of a pain and also an art to do this right.

wet and dry sandpaper 800 then 1200 will get rid of the dark marks and smooth it out then apply some paint. You can buy kits on ebay and amazon. I've done it a few times and good for little dings like that.
