Apparently, neither do most BMW Service Advisors or technicians...

The bloody brake squeal is back with a vengeance the past 2 days!

Going to torque up the bolts to 160-170nm, unless anyone thinks that's too tight? :

Have you tried the 2/3 heavy braking stints from 70 to 10mph technique?

It works every time for mine - sure it's not ideal that it happens but very easy to rectify. It doesn't seem logical to keep (over) tightening the bolts that way as clearly something else is going on.

Either way, very annoying.

Given the hassle I had recently with overtightened bolts, I wouldn't recommend it!

Don't forget wheel bolt torque figures are based on threads being clean & dry with no grease or oil or copper slip etc!
What ever the pundits might say otherwise.

Be warned! A friend of mine lost a front wheel on a Jaguar, whilst on the move, due to greased-up threads!

Mine also squealed today for the first time and I've been nowhere near my wheels or my nuts.... However, roads around here were salted for the first time last week so my guess is that, in my case anyway, it could be the colder weather or the road salt.

What happened, over torqued 'wet' and they stretched?

I don't really think your initial torque value at 120Nm, being adjusted to 140Nm would be the reason for the squeal disappearing, even temporarily.

Never heard of that being a solution.

Right I'll leave the torques as they are. I will try the heavy braking technique when I get an opportunity.

Have you managed to solve this conundrum. Mine went into the dealers on Thursday they drove it said they couldn't hear anything got it back this morning drove 5 meters and it started squeaking. No technicians were available to do a test drive. Booked back in for next Friday but they said a loan car is £18 a day insurance and over Christmas I'm not looking to accept that as it could easily end up being 5days plus because of the holidays.

I haven't done the hard braking technique yet. The squeal comes and goes, it not there most of the time tbh, the wheel bolt torque definitely made a huge difference.

Coopers courtesy cars are either £16 per day, or free if you agree to a £1000 excess. Worth asking your dealer if they can do that.

Just keep practicing the heavy braking method (2-3 times, break very heavily from around 70mph to 20-30). Remember, do not stop, continue driving and apply light brake pressure afterwards otherwise your discs could (potentially) warp - however unlikely it's not work the risk.

It's what I do, it fixes it every time - for a while. This crappy weather is a nightmare for this.

As Mark says! I'm having to do the "hard bed in" roughly every 500-1k miles.

This has just started to happen with my car? Changed to winters last November so don't know what it has just started?

It's cold, icy and wet here so that may contribute to it but was the same over Christmas and they didn't squeal then?
