Warranty vs squeaky mirrors

2014 328xi bought new, now at 28,000 miles. Warranty expires in May '18.

Both mirrors squeak when they are retracting. But it only happens when it is hot out, say 85degF or higher. So here in New England I don't think it can be demonstrated before warranty expires.

Dealer will notice that the driver's mirror has a slight scuff mark from a low speed garage contact. Squeaking started a year or so later, and right mirror was never hit.

I do have video clips from last summer where the squeak is audible.

One thought - heat the mirror with a hair dryer in an attempt to replicate; don't know how advisible that is or if dryer would provide enough joules to make a difference against a large heat sink.

I'd rather not run out the warranty with a known problem and potentially expensive repair.

This is the only problem with the car so far.

Any ideas on how to approach this with dealer?

Thanks.

Had a similar issue on my last F30. In addition one of the mirrors would fold past 90 degrees after retracting. I took a picture and showed it to my SA which was enough for them to replace it.

I also would get the squeaky folding mirrors when it was warm. Dealers wouldn't replace them as i they claimed it was a common occurrence. I did find using a dry silicone lube spray cured the issue though.

It squeaks when the rotation point is dry. I have resolved this issue by using WD-40.

tariqhaque and xantdieselx,

So am I correct that even if I could demonstrate the squeak it doesn't matter because they would not fix it anyway?

Lubricate them.

Bring it in, show them the video, and tell them flat out that it stopped doing it when the weather turned cold. They may be able to fix based just on the video; but if not, tell them specifically that you want your records to show the problem before the warranty expires.

I took my car in on Wednesday for an oil change and mentioned to the SA that my passenger mirror likely need lubrication due to clunky closing when it was cold. Showed them the video I took and they replaced the mirror. Part number 51167285136

Interesting. Suggests they didn't think resolvable by lubrication alone. Or maybe you have a good dealer. Soon enough I'll find out about mine.

I guess it depends on the dealer. My driver's side was replaced under warranty but it would squeak and extend past 90 degrees in the normal position. The passenger side was extremely squeaky especially when it was hot out. I made a video, brought it to service and they initially said they were going to order the parts. They called a few days later saying it was normal operation and they wouldn't be able to get it covered through BMW.

If it weren't a lease I would have pushed the issue but I took advantage of the pull ahead program and got rid of it about 6 months later. Make a video and push for it. You don't want it to get worse out of warranty. Good luck.

Hmmm. That's funny my passenger side mirror squeaks only in freezing temps. As soon as it hit 50 here in Chicago last week it went away. Back down into the teens squeak came back. I sprayed WD-40 no help. Had it in for service told them about the problem they said they lubricated it, worked ok for a couple of folds then back to squealing. It's been close to 100 here last summer and never had an issue until it got cold.

When present due to high temps, my squeak goes away if it's raining or if I poor a bucket of water over the top. Tried a little silicone spray once which provided temporary relief, but didn't want to mess it up somehow with excess home treatment before complaining to the dealer.

The variations on this problem and seemingly inconsistent response on the part of the dealers suggests a design flaw. Class action anyone? (just kidding)

I've used WD-40 White Lithium spray in the past with good results. lasts about a year. Just switched to WD-40 Dry Lube spray this last week. Will see how long that lasts.

My M235i does it in the summer as well. Albeit not nearly as bad as my previous F30. I would agree with it being a design flaw and across all models apparently.

My car is in the dealer currently getting a new brake caliper due to the M logo fading on the caliper. I told them about the mirror squeaking again (2nd time they heard about it) SA called and said they lubricated again tested the mirror a few times and the squeak came back, he says they will replace the mirror under warranty. They're probably aware of the problem so I'd urge you guys to keep pushing them. Good luck.

After action report

Car is back from 4th and final annual service under warranty. From dealer invoice:

"Found mirrors to not be making noise at time of service. Customer provided video demonstrating their complaint. Performed lubrication of
exterior mirror pivot point using HHS-K synthetic lubricant and operated mirrors multiple times."

S.A. acknowledged that it is a known issue and subject of a service bulletin. The solution involves a "special" lubricant.

The dealer and S.A. generally deserve high marks for civility and professionalism. But won't know till the summer heat if the problem is solved.
