Rain lottery in Oschersleben: Augusto Farfus fifth for BMW – Martin Tomczyk also in the points.

Oschersleben (DE), 18th May 2014.

The rain that started to fall as the lights went out to signal the start of the second round of the 2014 DTM made the race in Oschersleben (DE) a tyre lottery. After an eventful race, with no fewer than three safety car periods, Augusto Farfus (BR) came home fifth in the Castrol EDGE BMW M4 DTM, while Martin Tomczyk (DE) also picked up points, finishing ninth in the BMW M Performance Parts M4 DTM.

Lady luck deserted the rest of the BMW drivers in difficult conditions: despite impressive displays for vast stretches of the race, they still missed out on a place in the top ten. The last of the three safety car periods brought the field back together and resulted in Tomczyk, António Félix da Costa (PT) and Bruno Spengler (CA) who were battling for places on the podium at the time losing valuable positions.

DTM rookie Félix da Costa finished 11th in the Red Bull BMW M4 DTM, missing out on the points by just 0.2 seconds. He was followed by Spengler in 12th in the BMW Bank M4 DTM. Maxime Martin (BE, SAMSUNG BMW M4 DTM) was 14th, while Joey Hand (US, Crowne Plaza Hotels BMW M4 DTM) came home 15th.

Marco Wittmann (DE) was unable to convert the pole position, to which he was promoted after the post-qualifying disqualification of Audi driver Miguel Molina (ES), into any form of result. Form the start, Wittmann was able to defend first place in the Ice-Watch BMW M4 DTM and actually started to pull away from the rest of the field. However, he lost valuable ground at the restart after the first safety car period when he skidded into the gravel trap in turn one. He then dropped further down the field with a technical problem. After 44 laps, Wittmann eventually crossed the finish line in 19th. Timo Glock’s (DE) race was over after just a few laps. The German spun while battling with Mike Rockenfeller (DE) and beached the DEUTSCHE POST BMW M4 DTM in a gravel trap.

Jens Marquardt (BMW Motorsport Director):
"The weather conditions made that an unbelievably eventful and hectic race – certainly one of the most exciting in recent years. We are obviously not happy with the result. However, it does not reflect the performance of the BMW M4 DTM. When you start from pole, you obviously want to win. However, we did not have the luck we needed in the race today. Marco Wittmann had a particularly unlucky race. First he made a slight mistake at the first restart, and then he was struck by technical problems. Augusto Farfus was able to make the most of these conditions. Congratulations to Christian Vietoris and Mercedes-Benz on a spectacular win."

Can you just simply list the race finishing order next time. Nice to know where the other drivers/brands finished.

Is this good or bad for the M4? I'm not sure what to make of it.

I would like one of those M4 just for weekend driving.

I don't think we can compare these DTM M4 with the road M4. They are just using the M4 shell and a NA V8. IMO DTM is pointless unless you put other brands of cars in it, like GTR, Camaro, 911, astons etc

I think you read the wrong source (dated the 17th - qualifying, instead of the 18th - race day) and misread it. The article you linked talked about qualifying. And only one driver qualified in the top 10. "During the qualification which took place earlier today, the only Mercedes-AMG driver to qualify in the top ten was Mercedes Junior Pascal Wehrlein (gooix Mercedes-AMG C-Coupe), whose time of 1:20.668 minutes gave him tenth position for the start of the race tomorrow."

It wasn't just one AMG driver qualifying and then finishing 10th in the race.

AMG won the actual race.
"Mercedes' Christian Vietoris came from the back of the field to take an incredible maiden DTM win in wet conditions at Oschersleben."

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/114002

And aren't they in 3rd place overall? Or am I misreading that?

And haven't they won every F1 race this year?

So how many BMW's, Audi's and Mercedes participate? Is there same number of cars from each brand in these races? Because that would have an impact on the possibilities and chances of a brand winning...doesn't it?

Audi and BMW each have 8 cars, Mercedes has 7. Since BMW's return in 2012 they have won 12 of 22 races, with Mercedes and Audi splitting the rest in Mercs favor. In BMW's first year 2012 when they won all 3 championships they had 6 cars with Merc and Audi having 8.

BMW got shafted with the weight addition & it clearly shows in this race.
