Look at all the shit on the previous pages I'm NOT going to read....

Anyway I love the car from what I've seen (and the Super Bowl was one of my favorites). If anything happens to the M3 after the S13 is fully caged I think I'd lease a spartan CLA. The A3/4 is beyond boring and an F30 might be more than I'd want to spend.

Yeah those look nice. I'm more excited about the 4 series coupe though.

Next car might be the CLA45 AMG over a 435/440i. But who knows, I'll have to drive both. As of now, I prefer the driving feel of the BMW over the Merc, but I've heard the F30 doesn't deliver the feel like the E9X, and the styling is, as always, a matter of opinion (and I love the interiors of Mercedes and how this car looks)

M4 is top on my list... but that's a pricey upgrade.

Fair enough.

The American market is the only place where people have misguided concepts of brand prestige and dilution. MB, BMW and Audi all sell 'economic' models everywhere else in the world because they don't have to worry about this strange maintenance of brand cache by selling affordable vehicles.

You'll probably want the 4-Series if you're a fan of RWD and driving dynamics. This car looks more based toward people that want the Benz looks and interior and couldn't care so much about how it drives so long as its competent.

Even the AMG? (true, we don't have much info on it, and I probably won't want to go from an I6 to a 4 cylinder engine).

I am interested in the 4 series. Maybe it's because the F30 3 series is a sedan that I'm not all that enthused yet.

I'm not sure why you call it "misguided concepts of brand prestige". It is not like Mercedes and BMW sold their economic models in the US from the get go. Mercedes never did; BMW you could say the high-end luxury part caught up with the high prices somewhere in the mid 1980's. It's what is expected of the two brands in the US. The economic models, the BMW 318ti comes to mind, never sold well here. Mercedes and BMW made their respective beds (selling high-margin, high-end sedans), which they now must lie in, in my opinion.

Despite the badges; a low-price (relatively) well-built FWD sedan are offered by almost every manufacturer who sells cars in the US. I’d by numerous other models at $10K less than the CLS and have just as nice a car to drive.

They can't survive and grow as a company if they stick to the old notion that these badges force them to sell a limited product range. Even more so if that notion means that they can't or shouldn't sell more affordable, mass produced, high volume, cash cow models (like the BMW 1 Series, Audi A2 and A3, and Mercedes A-Class and B-Class).

Businesses have to continuously evolve to survive and flourish. Take Porsche, for example. Along the same lines, their old brand image meant that they shouldn't have made SUVs, yet look how beneficial that's been for the company; the overwhelming majority of Porsche sales are Cayennes.

I personally think the idea is unrealistic. And in the end, the more choices the buyer has, the better - period.

Looks really good....loved that commercial yesterday.

A low/modestly powered car is fine to commute and cruise around in, but the FWD is disappointing. I'm guessing the AMG model could hit $50K, wouldn't consider it at that price.

I'm guessing this CLA will have better luck in the USA than the BMW 318ti and Mercedes Coupe. For one, it's a sedan. Two, it's a pretty decent size (about the same size as a C-Class). It most likely will cut into C-Class sales, but that's Mercedes' problem, not consumers' problem.

And I actually like Mercedes and BMW's business model in Europe; selling many different models at many different price points. Maybe because I'm an auto enthusiast and I don't let brand image fog my judgement, but I really wouldn't care if my landscaper pulled up in a BMW or Mercedes. It wouldn't prevent me from purchasing one. That's just me.

The AMG would be AWD, not FWD

Superbowl: Mercedes CLA

All,

Did you all catched the Mercedes CLA commercial during the Superbowl? Car looks interesting and only $30k. This car is suppose to be the more economical version of the CLS. What do you all think of the car?
