These are the first pictures of a early hybrid prototype for the next generation 3 series from BMW, as indicated by the "Rescue" stickers on its doors (which has been present on past hybrid BMW test vehicles).

The F30 3-series will be the first 3-series hybrid from BMW and will adopt much of the technology from the upcoming hybrid F10 5-series. The F30 hybrid will be released some time after the diesel and petrol F30 versions are released next year.

Besides serving as proof of an upcoming F30 hybrid, the photos provide us more views of the tail lights when lit, as well as new wheels that have yet to be seen on previous F30 test cars.

Why does the F30 get regular (bulb) brake indicators, but the LCI E92 get full rear LED signal, brake and "light bar" treatment?

If they added the LED to the tail light in the first version they couldnt add it the LCI update and get people to upgrade Lol

First off, nobody is going to mistake the F30 for anything other than a 3 series BMW. The design cues are very strong. As all are asking, what is the gas mileage. Perhaps the real question is what is the payback period. The EPA would have us believing that the average automobile price increase of the new gas mileage rules is low and the payback quick. When gas was $4 per gallon in the US, several economists said that even the Prius would not pay back its owner over a 5 year period. Now consider how much more high end hybrid cars are priced over their petrol and diesel siblings and where does that go? Too bad diesel availability in the US is so limited. Besides, what are we going to do with all the worn out battery packs?

I don't know, hybrids until now haven't been too impressive.
I'm curious to see how this one will turn out.

But I'd still go for the normal 3er. I just don't like Hybrids somehow, makes me think I'm driving a transvestite.

Does this mean no F30 335d here in the States? I doubt BMW will import more than 3 engine/powertrain choices for the F30.

if it's a 2.5L i6, most likely around 38 to39; maybe high 42.
I keep saying that manufacturers need to invest in Hybrid diesel.
people will buy it because A)it's a BMW, and B) it's a Hybrid.

Why BMW? Why won't you give us the 50 mpg 320d, that would be less expensive, lighter and nimbler, more fun to drive, more environmentally friendly, and more fuel efficient than this hybrid?

Ya, I supposed you're right. However the F10 has full LED tail, including brake lights.

I just realized today that while my (daily driver) '06 Accord has LED brake lights (mid cycle refresh) the '08 new-body-style model went back to bulbs.
