5D mkII getting manual video controls in June

Anyone else excited? Tricking the camera is such a pain so I never really captured much video. With the firmware you'll have manual control over the ISO, Aperture, and Shutter speed.

I am looking forward to it. I've only dabbled with video in the couple months I've had the camera, but auto-only was a real limitation even so. I've been a Canon shooter for a long time and am very pleased that they've chosen to provide such a significant feature upgrade via free firmware (rather than just the usual minor bug fixes). The downside is that the 5D2 is about to get even more impossible to find for sale.

Haha it actually doesn't mean much to me but it's nice to see that Canon is listening to their customers.

haha. this is our ghetto rig for the 5D of old zacuto shit we have laying around. the 5D shouldn't be used without a mattebox, honestly. i was shooting in broad daylight at wide-open f/1.4 and a 180˚ shutter. beautiful. we were doing a test run for the 48-hour film festival - something we won't have time to use the RED for. the 5D footage is compressed and fast to edit and finish. i'll post some samples when i get back to work in the AM.

as to a "proper" video camera - sometimes a client's budget doesn't allow for a RED workflow. or sometimes you want something smaller and lighter.
33 lbs versus 5-10 lbs:

oh, you meant a proper video camera closer in price to the 5D? well - why shoot on a sensor the size of your pinky's nail when you can shoot one that's 36x24mm? ;]

that battery on the back end is just a dead-weight to help with balancing.

the 35mm f/1.4L is wrapped in a follow-focus gear threading, which is mounted on the left side. the mattebox has double stacked ND filters (1.5 and 0.9, i think) - total of about 8 stops of light. without, i'd have been shooting at f/22 (mainting the 180° shutter - 1/60th) and that would have just been ugly.

that's the reason for all the junk in the rig, in case you were wondering. the only thing left out is the external Marshall LCD monitor and the mic out for the shotgun boom.

Jeeze. You've probably mentioned this before but what do you do for a living with all this equipment?

Are you kidding?

Rodi, did you build that rig yourself? About how much would it cost to replicate (the sled and the grips)

And does it hurt your shoulder after a while? I don't see any padding.

that little grey rubber thing is a shoulder pad. it's not bad. what starts to hurt is your back and neck from trying to view the LCD on the back of camera.
see the first photo i posted to get an idea of the angle you have to keep your head. if the camera is further forward, you just have a bunch of front-heaviness. i'll be hooking up the external monitor tomorrow if i can ghetto-rig a way to mount it. it'll get pretty heavy really quick with the monitor's battery (identical to the dead-weight battery on the back that you see above).

the follow-focus and mattebox kit we have is about $3300.
the ND filters are pretty pricey at $160-180 per.
riser for the DSLR is about $150-$200.
the mounting plate is about $550.

you can get a whole kit (shoulder-rig, mattebox, follow-focus, grip, plate and rods) from redrockmicro for about $2500-$3000. these are specifically made for the lightweight 5D2 and D90.

ah, here ya go. this would be ideal. just add a good mattebox, filters and follow-focus. and something to help with viewing the LCD.
$775 for what you see here:

$3400 and no mattebox or counter-weights. ouch.
