I was given the option to sign up for the wheel and tire insurance up to 30 days after I drove off the lot. Now I don't know whether the Canadian offering is any different from the USA insurance, but I was told that they would not cover wheels and tires that were purchased elsewhere.

I have to get snow wheels and tires, and I'm not at all certain that I would get them at the dealership so the value is reduced for me. That's why I will probably not get the insurance before my 30 days is up.

I think BMW is making more money selling the tire and wheel insurance than they are selling cars

I was told that they DO cover wheels and tires purchased elsewhere.

According to BMWUSA.com:

Tires and wheels will be replaced using
original equipment manufacturer (OEM)
rims and OEM-approved tires and parts.

Hm, confusion. Well I don't think it would change my decision anyway.

RFTS--High Insurance Premium

Another problem with the RFTs...it makes the wheel/tire insurance very expensive.

I had an 07' E90 335i with sport package and 162 rims (sweet). But I had to replace 3 of my RFTs over a 5 year period due to eggs on the side walls. I also had one bent 162--$450.

Total out the door was about $2,200 for these replacements. So insurance saved me some $$$.

You are not running the low profile sport RFTs...so you may be okay. If you were going 19s RFT with low profile...I would say its a must.

Think it was Car and Drive who just did their 40,000 mile review on the 535i and they spent $4400 on new tires and bent rims over that mileage...WOW the added weight to the new 5er is wreeking havoc on the low profile RFTs and soft sport rims.

I now drive a 2012 Audi S4 with 19's and low profile summer tires (I live in NC so we rarely get snow) and the tire insurance was less than HALF. $600 bucks.

For that price it was a no brainer...especially when running with low profile sport 19 Contis.

The RFTs make replacement expensive...and insurance expensive.

Ok so here's clearing it up:

My dealer doesn't offer the BMW version of the insurance. It's a third-party that does cover non-oem wheels/tires. It's pretty much the same otherwise.

Well, I took delivery of my 328i today and I decided to get the insurance after all. I don't think that Discount Tire will have my run flats in stock on any given day, and I don't want to have to wait for them to have them delivered while my car sits there.
In the end, it was peace of mind that is worth $260 a year.

Ah, that would explain it.
