Picked up my car this afternoon as well. Noise and "loose" feeling completely gone. The whole thing feels well put together now, solid and crisp. The weighting appears to have firmed up a bit as well. All in all, big improvement.

Good to hear, will be interested to hear how it goes as it wears in... mine too was fine from day one, but progressively I could hear it creeping back.. Fingers crossed for you though

I'll be on the lookout for any return of the noise. Will keep updating.

Did you get yours replaced again?

Mine is being fixed as we speak...day 2 and they said they will need to order further parts. Slightly annoying a car of this calibre.

Twice now, the first time, they used the wrong steering column for a different F series (apparently)

My car came back with steering off centre now, and its not alignment, so I will be making another trip back to Perth in a week or so, to get this sorted as well as the reverse camera issue aswell as get them to check over the noise that I am hearing again from the rack.

My steering was off centre when I had my car returned also. Took it back yesterday morning and picked it up last night - was all good again.

I was told that the wrong column or rack (I can't remember which) was installed into my car, and it had to be redone as well. There was no wait for the new parts, even though I waited months for the parts, including the wrong part, originally.

Really hoping it doesn't happen again.

I wondering the the racks used were the same? mine was re-installed in May and now yours in August... hope I am not missing out on a new non problem plagued rack

BMW Sydney still have the car...apparently the part they used Monday hadn't fixed the problem so they ordered a new part along with a new computer component which was fitted today. Apparently they had issues with the Nav as well so that was being reprogrammed this afternoon and should be ready for pickup tomorrow. Annoying but can't really fault the customer service...been great from the start, will hopefully be all sorted tomorrow.

Guys do you know which build dates are suffering from this issue? Did they fix it after Jan 2013 builds?

I had a current rack installed in April and again in May 2013 and issue is slowly coming back... car is due at Auto Classic tomorrow morning... not impressed to say the least..

Anyone else with new rack noticing the issue has crept back also?

Ok so my knocking noise is back again as bad as it was the first time... really pissed now... spoke to the guys at auto classic who are pretty helpful and there is no further updated racks.. I am about to start waves on a bigger scale... this isn't really expectable. I love my F30, but hate it when I hear this noise. I have had it 12 months in October and never had that completely satisfied feeling...

Funnily enough, I had a brand new F30 M Sport as a drive car while mine was in being serviced and sorted, had about 600k on the clock, even though it seemed initially to not have any steering noise. after about 200k's i could hear a muffled noise of what I am experiencing and to me, it sounded like it would most certainly develop after time in this car too.

So I pose a question, does anyone think that this rack issue affects all F30? and just some of use are just noticing it more? mine is quite noticeable. however if it is only affecting certain F30, then you would think it would be an easy fix?!

Would like to hear from anyone else who has had the rack replaced and has the issue back again.

All going well with yours with the new rack and column?

Hmm. I don't think I can say conclusively yet. Which probably means no. I turned into my driveway recently and heard a distinct noise, highly reminiscent of what I was hearing constantly before the replacement. I haven't heard anything more but will be paying attention over the next few weeks.

Have you had yours replaced again? Have BMW given you any information as to why the problem isn't resolved yet?

hey guys,
I'm in malaysia and it sounds like mine has the same issue with the steering wheel, like a knocking/clunking (loose metal hitting each other) while turning left and over bumpy surfaces. I had my springs replaced with H & R springs, so I thought it was my front anti-sway bar that made the news, the mechanic didn't find any issues. I have yet to take the car back to bmw, thinking to see if others on the forum had the same issue, and I came across this thread, mine has done about 3500km, picked it up on 30 March 2013.

Did you have that noise before you put the H&R springs on?

I had the springs changed when the car ran about 1500km, the noise did not appear until maybe 1000km after the change. It had gotten a bit worse now.

That's f&*ked up. Mine doesn't make any noise when turning with the engine on, either stationary or on the move. I have not tried to turn the steering with the engine off.

I don't think your H&R springs would make any difference to your steering column making noises - this is a known problem with F30. Whether your dealer will try to blame it on your springs is another thing.

I know this doesn't sound like the best way to go about it, but given that labour is probably not that expensive in Malaysia, perhaps you can consider putting your original OEM springs back on (assuming you have kept them) and see if the noise is still there. If it is still there then take it back to the dealer with the OEM springs on and get it sorted.
