buy CPO 2013 vs Lease?

Hi all,

I wanted everyone's input on my next car purchase. My wife's 2008 TL is nearing 150k in march and we were thinking of upgrading to an f30 335xi. We have 2 options.

1. Buy a lightly used 2013 335xi (msrp new 56k), i have seen several for mid 40s, 45-46k CPO. I would put 10-13k down and finance the rest for 60 months.

2. Leave a new 335xi (msrp 56k), with maximum MSDs, no downpayment, at 15k miles.

We would ideally keep the car for 3-5 years as, by then we would have children and would be looking at an SUV.

As this would be my first lease car, I would appreciate everyone's input as to what would be more prudent money wise as well as any other general advice. My wife drives around 15k-18k miles annually.

thanks

I think it boils down to how long you plan on keeping the car. Buying slightly used is smart since you'd save on depreciation but if you plan on only keeping the car 3 years you should lease so you don't lose money on the trade in.

Thanks Ryan,

Any other input? Is bmw stringent on their lease turnin inspection?

I'm in a somewhat similar situation and am looking at leasing the 435i vs buying a late model E92 335i. I drive around 15K a year.

I've never leased a BMW before but have leased other makes in the past. Lease turn in is not a big deal as long as you don't abuse your vehicle. Make sure you put down MSD's to bring the MF down if you do go ahead with leasing.

My advice would be to buy a 1-2 year old low mileage BMW if you could find one with the options you like because if you drive more than 15K a year then leasing doesn't make financial sense, although some would argue that leasing in and of itself makes little financial sense.

That said, I'm planning on leasing as it's damn near impossible for me to find the exact car I want and I've been looking for 4 months now and have finally given up to order up a new one.

pardon my ignorance, what is a "CA"? I would love to do ED but I'm still a medical resident through my graduation in june and do not have time (after I graduate, move back to chicago, and start my job) to take a trip I wish I did.
