Carbon Fiber Interior Trim

So, I have been wanting to buy a Trim Kit (CF) for the interior of my F36GC

As I mentioned in another post, I am not a car guy and I get lost out there searching for the right parts. After looking at a few options, I ordered this kit from

https://monacoms.com/bmw-3-4-series-...m-overlay-kit/

After ordering it ($549 + shipping), I see that I totally missed that it's an Overlay Lit. It's supposedly real CF pieces that go over the OEM with double sided tape.

Is it me? OR is that just cringe? I can't believe I paid $550 for overlay pieces.

Looking further, I see that this price is about average and overlay kits seem to be pretty common. Is this gaudy? OR the norm?

IT has not arrived yet. But I already reached out to them to see about sending it back. They will take it back, with a 30% restock fee.

I can't get, in my head, that I am going to be sticking these over OEM, and leaving all that residue. And will it look bulky and fake? Will it come off? or start to in the edges and look crappy?

At this point, I think I will send it back and eat the HUGE restock fee. And then order the real replacement pieces (about $1k ayeeee).

Am I over thinking this? Are the overlay kits common or is it cheap looking??

What would you do?

That sucks friend, I hate it when that crap happens. If it's any consolation I have definitely done the same thing on other stuff more times than I care to share...

Regarding keeping it or sending it back, I hate to give you a non-answer but from my side I would honestly say "it depends". Looking at the pictures in the link you provided, to me it looks fairly clean for an overlay kit. Overlay wouldn't be my preference, but I also don't know what I'd pay an extra $700 or so for direct replacement.

I would say wait until it arrives, test fit a few pieces and see how it looks and then decide. If it would be super obvious that it's an overlay and that's going to bother you, then you might have to eat the restock and send it back. If it's clean looking and doesn't have major fit issues and isn't super chunky looking or feeling, might be worth sticking it out.

Good luck, trust your gut!

You can always look into getting a used set of M3/M4 carbon trim. Check out straight six auto parts on instagram. They pop up there quite frequently and are usually in the $500 price range.

Thanks, for the condolences and good advice. Part of me doesn't even want to open the box up LOL. Just take it right to Fedex and send it back. Deep down inside, I know I am not going to stick these on my OEM parts. It reminds me of back in the day, when I was in HS and we would go to places like 'auto zone' and buy all those cheap plastic add ons haha. What's next . . plastic hub caps? LOL

I didn't want overlays either and ended up buying the real deal from getbmwparts.com

It was expensive getting it shipped and imported to Canada, but OEM carbon was totally worth it.

Total "cringe". Send that $hit back and as others have mentioned buy the real thing. Think of the restocking fee as a penality to not reading/comprehending the seller's description. Hey.. we're all guilty of it, so no big deal. One last thing- This forum contains information about any possible mods that you want to do - its been done before! Get acquainted with the subforums and search. You'll find the good, bad and ugly on just about anything F30. Good luck!

Those photos are totally misleading!! What’s in those photos is not an overlay.

Hmmmmm

So, the CF overlay kit arrived today. I actually don't hate it as much as I thought I would. It's interesting, to say the least.

They are not flimsy sticker type of overlays. They are hard, thin CF. Although I did not 'permanently' put any pieces into the BMW, I did lay a few down and - wow. I will say that they fit perfectly. They click right in and become totally level with the other trim. Visually, you would never ever know these are overlay.

Does that change things? I don't know yet haha. I was certainly not wanting an overlay kit. I wanted real replacement pieces. But . . . considering the 30% restock fee is going to be over $150.00, I have some thinking to do. As these are not what I wanted, but certainly not as bad off as I had expected.

Those look pretty good for overlays. Kiesmotosports offers the same type of kit and I saw a video of Thic Whips installing the kit in his old F30 (older video) and you couldn't tell it was an overlay kit. Would I buy one? No. But do they look good? Yes they do.

Agreed - I would not buy one Intentionally. Not ever. But, now that I have it, and there is a significant financial loss in returning them. And, they do look decent. Laying a few pieces down, without the peeling the tape . . . they fit like a glove. There is NO visual signs that it's an overlay at all. No chrome exposed. No height issues. I half expected it to look like real garbage lol. For real

I have to think about it over the next 24 hours or so and decide what to do. These are not as bad as I expected. I might just take it a a lesson learned, and keep them.

Maybe keep the overlay kit for a while and in like 6-12 months buy a full replacement F80/F82 kit and sell yours to get back some money.

Very interesting. That’s certainly the best overlay I’ve ever seen.
