M Performance spoiler installation - Advice please!
I recently bought a genuine M Performance matt black plastic spoiler, and installed it yesterday using 3M 5952 VHB tape. I was a bit skeptical about not using Betalink, but definitely didn't want to use it unless I absolutely had to.
I applied the tape in the same areas as the BMW instructions, but as I'm sure you'll all know, the contact areas are tiny The spoiler fitted like a glove, and the leading edge and corner areas stuck very well. Unfortunately, the rear section of the spoiler did not stick very well at all. The backs of the corners were stuck, but after removing, I found only a very thin line where the tape had actually bonded. The middle section which bevels inwards did not stick at all. All areas were obviously cleaned thoroughly with degreaser and alcohol before install. Have any of you installed this spoiler successfully using tape alone? Which tape did you use, and how did you apply it? Thanks |

here's my tape pattern that i used, it's 3M VHB but not sure which exact model number. I've had zero issues and the spoiler is on and flush, the bond is super strong with no signs of lifting. hope it helps

It looks like your spoiler has a nice flat surface. Unfortunately, mine is hollow on the inside and only has a narrow lip on the back edge to secure tape on to. Sort of hard to explain. Rubbish design from BMW anyway!
I may have to get creative with layering the tape so that it sits flush to the surface. |

The M Perf rear spoiler for my F36 must be similar, with the separated application surfaces, and a particularly curvy lower-vertical section.
I applied mine with just 3M tape, even though I had beta-link. I prepped thoroughly and it’s held solid. I found by trial fitting that the tape was too thick trying to extend it into the break curves - causing the spoiler to not sit flush there. So I ended up going with a gap. Glue can obviously go thinner to apply there, thus why it’s their recommended adhesive. The ‘tape gap’, being where it’s located hasn’t been any issue (in fact even if it’s glued you have to leave gaps between the joined surfaces). A few pics I took just after final taping and prior to install.. |

Cheers for the help guys, I ended up doubling the tape up so its more forgiving of the imperfections on the spoiler. This seems to have done the trick as the spoiler is now mounted rock solid.
The only downside is that there is a small gap between the panel and the spoiler, but nothing too noticeable unless you're up close. I'd rather it be like that than fly off at motorway speeds! |

That 3m 5952 is some good tape. @90lbs per in - its not flying off
I went a little over board on the tape. I did not want water/dirt to build up in side 1/2in and 1in Last edited by p0p; 05-31-2022 at 11:22 AM.. |
