20 minutes ago I was driving my car home from a friend's. The person ahead of me was doing what people in this part of the state do, lighting a cig while driving 15 under, so I went to pass. As I downshifted the whole car shakes and I get lights and tones for an unspecified "Drivetrain Malfunction". I did the Lockheed fix (off/on) and it cleared before coming back again while accelerating through 20 mph. Any amount of acceleration causes the beast to shake. The tach shows stable revs in idle but the exhaust note pops and is unstable. I've got maintenance coverage for the next 6 years/93k miles but thought I'd run it past you folks, as well.

edit: 2017 340i xDrive, 6MT, 7.7k miles odo

As Romeo says: go to the dealer. Have it towed if it's undrivable - and ask for them to rebate the tow.

There are several hundred things it could be. A description like you gave is almost completely useless in diagnosing.

Ok buckos, the dealer service called back and we have a diagnosis- the rep said the coil was bad. I asked if they meant the coil pack and he said "no, it's a part that fires the cylinder so it's the cylinder coil that's bad." We'll give them a +1 for a quick turn troubleshoot, however, the standard -1 for BMW service rep's "how a car works" knowledge brings us back to a flat 0.

See that's what I asked. He said no. I know of literally no other coil that can be cylinder specific. I wish BMW service centers promoted from within the maintenance ranks to service reps as a rule.

I had the same issue multiple times and have a check engine for low boost pressure... The first time this happened they told me it was bad gas (I only use 93 from BP) and drove it 20 miles... Happened again, they replaced the manifold pressure sensor and drove 30 miles... Over the weekend it happened again so 3rd time back to the dealer we go. This is getting ridiculous.

Reference your state lemon law. I know in Colorado that would be grounds for a new car or a full refund.

This is going to get annoying. There is a Dinan elite tuner on the car and they are a Dinan authorized dealer. So far they have been putting everything under BMW warranty because this is an authorized modification. I'm curious what happens when they finally tell me its the tuner.

Anyone have experience with Dinan warranty?

Hey RockyMtn -

Just noticed you from the other thread. I'm the EB 340 in Denver. So I had this same thing happen to me about 4 months ago. I took it to Gebhardt (still living in Broomfield at the time...down south now). Ignition coil on Cyl-4. They had the car a few days, but it's been fine ever since.

If you take it to Gebhardt, work with Joel. He's been my SA for 6 years and he's great. Schomp - I don't know yet as I just moved down here. I've heard Chris is good.

If they find it's the tune they will remove the tune to see if it solves the problem. Then they will reinstall the tune to see if the problem returns. They will probably bill Dinan for the repair, if any.

There is a tune from Burger Motorsports on my 13 335xi that I did not know about prior to purchasing the car and that BMW is removing to properly diagnose the "Drivetrain Malfunction".

Would it be considered auto fraud for a dealer to sell you a vehicle with a non-authorized by BMW tune without disclosing it to you whether or not they knew about it? They said CPO 300 point inspection from BMW as a selling point. 24 hrs later, I have problems that BMW says are due to the tune. Stage 1 tune is from Burger Motorsports.

Don't know about fraud but yeah they definitely messed up their CPO inspection.
Kind of like my issue where I had a malfunction for a bad coil and Vanos days after purchase . If they actually looked at the diagnostics or ran one they would have seen those fault codes. I saw them day 1 when doing some coding.

Like most manufacturers, CPO program has some explicit language when it comes to rules. So I doubt they want any problems from BMW corporate.

That's pretty lame that the inspection didn't catch the JB4 tune, should be pretty obvious, was definitely a rush job and they should refund deductible money as it wasn't your fault. Why aren't there any CPOs with MPPSk or LSD lol, or M Performance Brakes? Maybe if they'll miss it in the inspection and you won't be charged for the upgrades!
