2013 335 transmission failure at 8000 miles
Guys, I have a 335 6MT that has been diagnosed with a faulty transmission.
The dealer said I need a new one and is replacing it with a remanufactured transmission. Is a remanufactured transmission the right one for me? Couldn't they get me a new transmission? Thanks in advance for any advice you may have. |

sorry to hear about this. I don't think it is fair that your car with such low miles should get a re-manufactured transmission that was possibly used for a duration longer than 8000 miles.
Not sure about your legal rights though. |

I'm curious as to why you would think that a transmission housing with all new internals wouldn't be a sufficient replacement? That's pretty standard honestly.
Sucks to hear yours failed, clearly a manufacture defect at such low miles.

I just want to know if a remanufactured transmission is appropriate given the low miles on the car. If it is, so be it, if not I want to get the transmission. Thanks!

Essentially the reman trans are brand new, I would imagine the only thing reused is likely the case.
When I worked for Volvo quite a few years back that was the case with the 4T65 transmissions that failed on a weekly basis. We would send the failed one back as a core, and would get a reman in return which you wouldn't even be able to tell between "new" and "remanufactured".

This happened to me at 9,500 miles, the 1st to 2nd gear synchronization was off. I received a brand new transmission replacement (6 speed manual) which shipped from Germany. Talk to your service manager and explain your disappointment and that you wouldn't accept anything less then a brand new transmission. It might take longer, but at the end of the day you have to be happy. Remember the cars re manufactured transmission is still under warrant so your fine either way.

Both of your transmissions that failed were "new" as well, just saying haha.
But like you said, they are both covered under warranty, both likely come from the same source, just one has a new sticker on it. I would ask the dealer for more details on the reman.

I think a remanufactured trans is just fine. Would you rather some tech at the dealer take it apart and try to fix it, or have a transmission specialist at BMW rebuild one like new and send it to the dealer to be installed? If the only option for BMW was to use new transmission, I think you would see BMW telling the dealers to fix them instead of BMW supplying new transmissions.

The exact same thing happened to my 2013 335i. Two weeks ago they replaced my 6MT transmission for faulty 2nd gear synchros although they put it a brand new one. Car went in on wednesday morning and I was driving it the next evening. Couldn't believe how fast they did it.

New tranny shifts like butter and feels better, I am a bit worried that it may happen again, it seems to be happening to alot of people. I have a warranty and will 100% purchase an extended warranty, because the bill was close to 5K.

So how did you get this diagnosis? Did your car just stop going into second? I'm just curious if there are any symptoms I need to look out for before this happens.

When switching from first to second gear (clutch fully engaged) it would grind for a split second then go into gear. It would always happen on high rpm shifts and would occasionally happen on regular shifts. I took it to the dealer after only 8 times of not being able to shift into second gear properly as it could cause even more problems to the transmission. I was told the synchronization was off and I need a new tranny.

Eeek. Well I'm 24k in and no problems so far. I hope this is a very rare exception.

Quite shitty.
I have never had any grinding or issues to speak of...but 2nd gear is a bitch when downshifting from 3rd at high speed/RPM. It just doesn't want to go in. |

Same here. At first it would only happen at really high RPMs then after a few months it would do it ALL the time. If I gave it 2 seconds for the synchros to catch up 2nd would go in smoothly with no grind. BMW changed the gearbox no questions asked. Looks like it might be an issue with this transmission since there's at least 3 people with 2nd gear synchro problems just on this forum.
