I mean, if you're looking to see if it was a salvage, just googling that VIN seems to give a lot of good hints that it was totaled at one point in a front-end collision...

What you'll probably get for your $55 is a report showing how many times the car has been registered, including renewals, and inspected. Once when I sold a car the potential buyer saw 14 'incidents' on the initial free report. When they paid the $$ they found out that was one registration, six registration renewals and seven inspections.

If it's private party, I'd ask the seller to obtain it. Even if YOU don't buy it, he/she can have it on hand for the next prospective.

I wouldn't trust this. People can tamper papers easily. If the seller wants, he can send you a link to the CarFax on the vehicle if he pays for it, then he can link it to you. But if he offers to print it out and show it to you, I personally wouldn't trust someone bringing me that...

Maybe it's just me but with the potential scams I have seen, I just don't trust private sellers any longer. And if I look up a VIN and see the word SALVAGE anywhere, just like this VW Jetta, it's an immediate no-go for me. I still remember when I asked a guy why the steering wheel got replaced on a 2012 Mustang GT and him saying it was because 'the emblem got scratched' and it had never been in an accident. Bullshit. The airbag went off and the wheel was replaced in return. I called him out on it and he booked it immediately and changed his post.

Don't trust strangers, especially people selling cars. People will do anything to get cash in hand and car out of their hair.

Ahh, then yes, this! The only cars I ever really considered when looking for a temporary used car were the ones that could provide me a link to the specific vehicle CarFax.
