First set of tyres shagged; winter options?

Well, 36,500mls later from leaving the showroom in June 2012, the first set of Bridgestone Potenza's have bitten the dust. The front right's outer sidewall especially! Pictures below show that in comparison to the other tyres, though all are on minimal tread depth now and require changing.

So, on that topic and being that time now where we see <7C, I have some options!

So, do I just go and get another set of shoes (Potenza's again) or should I look into winter tyres? Last year I didn't bother with winter's and just ran the Potenza's throughout on my 18" 225/255 setup. It did alright. I just didn't bother driving it if conditions meant it wouldn't move.

Now, I'm pretty certain your responses will suggest I grab a set of winter rubber and I completely agree it's a good option (money aside) as they look to work extremely well and increase safety.

Therefore, which is best and the most cost effective from your experience? I don't really want to get a set of new alloys, but is it suitable to have big fat 255's on the back? What sort of costs am I looking at do you reckon?

Cheers!

Thats unbelievable mileage from a set of run flats.
On my E90 330d OEM run flat rears only lasted around 12K miles.

Yeah pretty happy with that! Huh, 12? That's shite!
Can't remember what my E90 330d did, but it got that many punctures I don't think it ever got a complete new set on at once.

I thought the best setup for winter tyres was 225/45/18 on all four corners?? When I bought my winters are few months ago the research on forums etc recommend this

Yeah my thoughts exactly - you don't want wide shoes on the snow! But I don't really want to blow the cash on another set of (less aesthetically pleasing) alloys... Hmm!

21.5k miles on my 320d from new and still on original tyres with about 4.5mm per tyre, impressed front and back wearing equally.

Are your 18" mixed (225/255) or square (225/225)? Which make and model of tyre did you opt for out of interest?

Will be interesting to see how the xDrive variants wear compared to sDrive....

To the OP...have you got the tracking done on your car recently? Seems like you still have excessive wear on the edges.

To the OP....

My advice is to buy some Non runflat winter tyres (cheaper than runflats) and then buy my old 18" Contisport 5 SSR's that I toot off my wheels to make room for my winters

I actually found there was virtually no difference in price between some winter non-runflats vs run flats...not quite sure why though

I haven't, though it had its first service at 26,000mls. I believe the wear is largely caused by roundabouts as when turning right, the front right arcs in, placing more load on the sidewall which is then taking the scrubbing and the wear. The inside of the front left (most loaded contact patch on a roundabout) is also the most visibly worn part of the tyre, though not to the same extent as the front right's outside sidewall.

I'd like to keep with RFT tyres really for 2 reasons - 1) The chassis and suspension was designed for runflat tyres. 2) The car is parked near the door of a warehouse during the working week so the likelihood of punctures is raised, and RFT's have saved my ass/kept peace of mind multiple times. I'm also high mileage, so the importance of that is stressed!

Maybe more effective economies of scale now as more cars are using RFT's?

Yeah, common thing for the RFT's to to ride and wear heavily on their sidewalls.

Seems it is mostly BMW drivers that use Winters, so RFT is the popular option

True, BMW and Winter Tyres seem synonymous really! Are Bridgestone Bilzzak LM-25's run flats? I think they are but I'm looking at a website and it mentions nothing of them being RFT. Also, do they have the protector lip like the Bridgestone Potenza's do? I like that because 1) It looks better as it gives a more chunkier look and 2) It protects from curb rash!

Though naturally, if you want to protect from curb rash, stay away from the curbs

That said, easier said than done when it's snowing (though I've not hit one yet!) so I'd expect the Blizzak's come with that...

EDIT: Just as an aside, I had Pirelli PZero's fitted to my E90 LCI 330d and they looked crap in comparison to the Potenza's as they had no protector lip and looked skinny like it barely fitted the alloys!

If you slide into a pavement, don't think a tyre lip is going to help any

True, but it'll help on those damn near stationary snakey moments! But I largely prefer the look of them.
