Until your insurance renewal arrives, as the b****rds are now using attendance at Speed Awareness Courses as a reason to ramp the premiums.

Sadly they get you with the 'duty of disclosure'

Not sure if they have the capability just yet..

They would need a central database to check if you withheld that you'd been on a SA course, from what I gather the courses are run by independent companies local to where your were caught speeding.. Unless things have changed now.

I haven't been on one for years as I have been a good boy...

Actually - I had to attend one of these for being flashed by mobile camera on the A31 Hogs Back. It was interesting to see the level of knowledge and awareness of some of the other attendees - ranged from 20 year old white van man to 70plus pensioner - with huge variety of in between.

Actually was more to do with road awarenes than being accusatory - left realising that driving these days is more about anticipating the lack of awareness of others and planning for consequential dramas / accidents which may have had nothing to do with you ie all in all staying out of trouble so you dont have all the hassle of insurance claims

My six cents anyway...

Unfortunately it's not about systems and stuff, it's about the policyholder's or applicant's responsibilities. So they don't check you've been on a course, instead you have a duty to disclose the fact when taking out or renewing your insurance. True, they may never find out, the problems start IF they find out.

What gets me is that the onus is on the policyholder to disclose what they think is relevant, but most policyholders are not insurance experts so how could they possibly know everything that's relevant? That leaves a grey area that can leave a claimant seriously out of pocket through no real fault of their own. E.g. if you are aware of an attempted break-in (car or house) then even if you don't intend making a claim, you're supposed to disclose this to your insurer as they will consider it a material fact. What they do with that info is up to them, be it hiking your premium, withdrawing cover or ignoring it.

I saw a guy's medical claim being rejected simply because he hadn't disclosed that his father had suffered a completely unrelated illness. Claims handlers can be evil, callous b@$tards

Apparently these courses now DO increase insurance premiums. Big piece about them on news last week.

You can take the course locally can't you? It doesn't have to be in the same county/city.

I got a letter last week from Thames Valley Police, 35 in the 30 from a mobile van. Thankfully her indoors was driving so she can do the course.

I would (if offered) take this if it was local.
Not had the dreaded NIP yet.

Good news John. They have to send it to the registered keeper within 2 weeks of the offence, so you're in the clear

I was on a course last wednesday and after reading on here I asked the guys taking the course.
They insisted that unless asked by your insurance company you don't have to make them aware that you have been on a speed awareness course. ??

I'd check the terms of your insurance policy just to make sure, and if anything is open to interpretation then err on the side of caution; you know what insurance companies are like!
