I'm just back from Glasgow and a kind lorry driver flicked up a stone and chipped and cracked the windscreen

The stone hit so hard I had ringing in my ears for a good 10 mins after



Should I get BMW to do it and wait a week or so, or call my insurance? I get the choice of £50 excess with their windscreen company or £75 if I take it elsewhere.

I had my M3 screen done on my insurance, I wasn't 100% happy with the fit so would recommend BMW. However that may have just been a one off, can't say I've ever had a prob other than that.

Having said that I had the screen done on my 335d once and they turned up with the wrong one - right screen but not climate control glass. So a bit of messing for a day or

Here's my thoughts

Take the risk with Autoglass and get non OEM glass installed. However, that's what these fellas do on a daily basis, so they are arguably the experts.

Or, to the local dealers and get OEM glass, maybe have to wait longer, However, windscreens are not their daily bread and butter.

Or maybe not?

For example, a senior manager of a well-known insurer did not want them doing his own car, despite being insured via 'the business', and Autoglass being the 'approved' or nominated supplier.

Had 2 chips in the windscreen in the last 2 weeks! Loads of chips already on the paintwork including 2 on the passenger door! I have seen most before they hit and most have been flung up from vehicles on the other carriageway! One of the ones on passenger door was when I was stationary at a junction and a stone was flung up by a passing car! Huge great stones that make one hell of a noise when they hit.
Not really surprising as the roads have seriously broken up where I live.

No, I don't have HUD but I suspect there's going to be a list of different windscreens to accommodate various extras.

Might try and get the grey shade band. I don't have one at the moment and I can't see that it'll interfere with anything

So very annoying. Feel for you. Try Autoglass as this is what they are expert at all the time. But keep a hawk's eye on them.

Just had my screen replaced by Autoglass in Aberdeen fits perfect no problems,the replacement screen does not have bmw stamp on it but it is made by pilkington ( manufacture of original screen )and has the same part numbers

Bit the bullet and went with the insurance company and luckily it's Autoglass. I had a call from the local depot to confirm the booking and I quizzed the bloke on the the windscreen make and it is Pilkington, just the same as OEM but without the BMW logo. (as @cloudhopper said)

Hearing good things about Autoglass from others and I'll see how it goes tomorrow when they fit it.
