Sorry to be thick but does twin power mean twin turbo on a 6cyl 3.0d engine

No, 30d is a single turbo. Twin power I believe relates to turbo charged.

I believe it relates to the twin scroll design of the turbo:

http://www.modified.com/tech/modp-09...system-design/

That article refers to a 4 cyl engine, but you can get the idea behind the technology.

.....except for one little fly in the ointment.....all single turbo diesels are single scroll and all carry 'Twin power' badges.

Only the 335i and 335d have twin turbos. Twin power is just marketing fluff.

I thought the 335i was a single turbo? It was in the later e90s. The early e90s had two turbos.

N54 (pre-LCI) 35i had twin turbo's then this changed (EfficientDynamics) when the N55 was introduced and made a single, twin scroll turbo - hence "TwinPower". But "TwinPower" is also applied to the 30d where Variable Turbine Geometry was introduced, thus giving "TwinPower" again as it is more effective (maybe to the point of bi-turbo, I don't know) than a single fixed geometry turbo.

Twin scroll helps at the low end, by separating the exhaust pulses. This helps spool marginally. Total power output is no different for a given AR housing.

Bi-turbo, twin turbo, etc is mainly a marketing upgrade. It is not necessarily better than a single turbo.

I'm surprised Bmw still stayed with the two turbo configuration on the 335d.
They could of upgraded a version of the 330d single turbo power unit (essentially the PPK) and marketed that as the 335d. Would have been a lot cheaper, production cost wise than a two turbo unit?

Don't agree fella.

Alpina go to the trouble of engineering twin turbos for their B3 on the N55 engine. This engine has the flanges on the crankcase engineered by BMW for twin turbos, ready for the M3 and M4. Done properly, one would expect a quicker response from a two turbo solution.

The 325d has two turbos.

Didnt realise the 325d had two turbos....thought it was only the 335d in the range that had two turbos.
Just checked the brochure, you're right....

And are there any Alpina Turbo cars that don't have 'Bi-Turbo' emblazoned on the boot? Hmmm ....smacks of marketing to me.

You can debate the 'half the engine feeding a small turbo', or 'whole engine feeding a large turbo' all day long. Fact is 'done properly' you can get same performance from either solution.

Packaging helps the twin turbo at times, and on V engines is almost mandatory, so there are reasons for choosing one or the other, not always for performance.....

but one thing is for sure, to the average punter 'twin' is always better than one. Ker-chiiiiiiiing!!!!

New engine in 435xd is also a twin power/scroll, SINGLE turbo - hence the significant reduction in CO2s down to 128g/km.

Doesn't look like it has filtered to other models...yet.

Was twin, now single.

(I can't find the text on BMW site now, so slightly anxious!)

Least I now know what's eating all the fuel in my 325d

"BMW TwinPower Turbo with 2 turbochargers, intercooler"

More to go wrong I guess, the extra turbo and larger breaks explain the 325d's weight gain over the 320d

I'm not sure it cost much different TBH. I've yet to see the specs of the 335d F30 N57, but from memory the LCI 335d e90 had two non VNT turbo's. VNT adds cost.

Seing the power curves of the 330d and 335d, they certainly make power at different rev ranges, all courtesy of the turbo arrangement.
