so i have around 1300km on my car (800miles). Ive been making sure to shift at 3k and not drive it hard by any means till the break in period. However, i was with some friends yesterday and they redlined the car in 1st,2nd, and not sure about 3rd. I know it can't be good but since this was the first time it was done to the car, would you say its not a big deal? i'm sure people red line new cars all the time but I'm just trying to take extra caution. I wanted them to have fun with the car so that's why i let them so it wasn't their fault in anyway.
meanwhile i'm going to make sure i shift at 3k like a old man

It's not a big deal.

If it were, every car that was test driven ever would explode after 2000 miles.

There are a lot of long technical articles you can read on break in philosophy, but all in all there's nothing to worry about. Not like you can take the car in and ask them to rebuild the engine because it hit redline.

I don't think I made it to 200 miles before I saw redline.

My car will see redline about 15 minutes after I get it. Driving around a new car under 3k isn't going to do anything beneficial.

Performance shops that build engines throw it on the dyno and tune it up to redline right after being built....so I wouldn't be worried.

As long as you let the oil warm up for about 5 or so minutes it should be fine. The engines are built to handle the strain and as long as you don't red line every time you drive it constantly then you should be fine. I did my euro delivery and drove the first few hundred miles from Munich to Paris at around 120ish mph on the auto bahn. Car drove just as smooth as when I first got it after I dropped it off with 1500 miles. Punch it a little in sport mode and you'll never want to use comfort or eco pro mode ever again.

Yea man, you're fine. Try to break it in according to the schedule, but if you rev it high a few times, your car will forgive you (as stated by the test drive reply above)

It's not a problem but I disagree with those who say basically that the BMW specified break-in procedure is unnecessary. Why not take it easy for a few weeks to make sure the parts bed in properly? BMW doesn't tell you this for the heck of it. Also, it's for sure a good idea to go easy on the brakes and tires during the first 1000 miles. It'll pay off in the long term.

Last, OP, you are very good to your friends. There is no way I'd let irresponsible friends drive my car much less do it during the break in period.

With 800 miles I bet you are ok. Remember, in addition to taking it easy on the engine, you should also vary the rpms too.

I'd say any RPM is fair game after it's oil temp is 200+ degF, 800 miles is plenty for break-in (BMW says 1,200 but it's probably conservative). You do know when people test drive the cars they always jam it to redline with only like 10 miles on it, and all those cars are still sold.
