2013 328i

Hi all,

First off, pretty new to the forum, plenty of good reads. Thank you for having me. I bought a cpo 2013328i xdrive a month ago and like it thus far.
Today I brought it to the dealer for service and received a 2015 328i service car. Driving away from the lot, I immediately noticed some differences between the service car and my car. Are there any key differences between years regarding the following?

First off, it sounded a lot louder. Love it, though makes my car sound like a wuss.

Second, my car sounds like it has a slight valve tap, almost sounds like a diesel. I asked the sales rep if that was normal when I first bought it, they assured me it was fine. But the service car make no such noise.

Third, my car seems to lag from a complete stop to when it actually starts to move. It will take half a second to move when I hit the gas. The lag is nearly non existent in the service car.

Anyone have any experience with this? Any input is appreciated.

-Daniel

I think the newer ones have active sound design!

The diesel sound is normal, I'm sure BMW has done some stuff to quell it over the years though since many people complain about it. Whether that is in the form of new injectors or insulation I'm not sure but I wouldn't be surprised if they've done something.

As for the lag you might want to ask about getting you cars software or Integration level updated to the latest version, that might help things operate a little smoother, as they definitely have made some great software improvements over the years (or so I would assume)

Lastly, I'm not sure if your 2013 has active sound design, but the 2014's and up definitely do (at least both of mine have)

The active sound is really satisfying..

I'll have to ask about the software update tomorrow morning. You would think they would make the updates before they sold me the car.

Unfortunately you can't code in Active Sound... I have no idea if it can be retro-fit. Other guys on here are trying to remove / disable it. There is hardware involved.

Personally I like it, it may be fake but it's a good fake. Sort of like... Oh never mind let's keep it clean.

I have a '13 328ix (4/13 build date) with a bit of lag too. Interested to find out about whether a software update would address that. I have an oil change coming up in about 3k miles. Wonder whether the dealer would address that?

The short lag is normal based on the way the throttle, gas, and exhaust work together.

I also have a '13 328i, and I've noticed differences in the things that you've described when I'm driving the loaner cars from BMW Service.

The diesel-like sound and feel is an attribute of the 4-cyl engine. BMW has been making refinements to the N20/N26 since its introduction in the F30, and I believe that it's quieter/smoother in the newer models I've driven. I've also noticed that the ASS is smoother in the newer models. (pun definitely intended). I have an F33 428xi on order, so I'll see first-hand pretty soon about the differences. Ask your dealer to flash you to the latest software, and that will make some improvements.

As folks have mentioned, ASD is not included in the '13 model, and it's not something that you can code around as hardware is required. It's interested as to how many folks are wanting to mess with it because it's not "genuine", but the exhaust sound out of the N20/N26 isn't that great anyway, so I'm personally exciting about the new sound, regardless of its authenticity.

I added the BMS Stage 1 tune to my N26, and that has made a perceptible difference in the throttle feel, especially in Sport mode. It's all plug & play, so takes about 10 minutes to install, and the power difference is amazing. I think they rate it at gains of about 40-50 bhp over the stock 240 bhp. Of course, as with any mod, you'll need to feel comfortable with it yourself, especially since you're probably going to be out of warranty at some point in the future.

I have a 2012 328i and also a 2014 328i, and the differences you described are exactly the case. On the 2012 model there's the diesel sound which is absent on the 2014. Also, the 2014 engine and transmission operates smoother than the 2012. On my 2012, gear changes, especially from 1-2, is very harsh and makes the car jerk. This is also absent on the 2014. BMW has made refinements over the years.

When I read all this, I'm glad with my 328i '14 model.

It's a significant update compared to '13 and '12 models, various software updates, touchpad on Idrive, and most important to me: Active Sound Design.

I think BMW should have cleared it out much more what the updates were when introducing the '14 model to inform customers.
