Hero Car Versus Mundane Car: E30 M3 Takes on F30 320d
BIMMERPOST NEWS Hero Car Versus Mundane Car: E30 M3 Takes on F30 320d Odd comparison huh? Well, this race is part of a segment by Auto Express in which hero cars of generations past are stacked against some of the more mundane offerings of today, to see whether the hero car's performance has stood the test of time. |

If the f30 was an auto, it would have beaten the e30, as much as I'd hate to say it.. Seems he was a crap driver though

Still remarkable how far cars have come in terms of accessible performance and economy. On the looks though it's damn close. The E30 is still stunning all these years later. |

This is like testing a new vs 68 Camaro on a slalom course, the results would be disappointing. These cars aren't about straight line drags, they are about handling dynamics, so why even bother mashing the gas and demonstrating their terrible clutch technique.

Ehhhh I fail to see the point of this demonstration. Yes we know that newer cars are faster, more economical.
I'd be more interested to see how the 320d with an M-Sport package and summer tires went around the track in comparison to the E30 M3. That would be a much more useful comparison IMHO. |

I like this. Very interesting comparison as I remember the cars of this era. The M3 did well but I expected it to win as it has more HP and I think its lighter too.
Look at the size difference!!! This is how big the 3-series coupe should be! |

next week he's going to race the 320d against a ferrari. that should be close between two cars that are cross shopped as well!

This is a great testament to the e30m3 after 30 yrs and it can still beat modern cars, just imagine what that car was like during it's era, just mind blowing !

The E30 M3 is a fantastic drivers car, but in a straight line, it struggles with modern comparisons. This whole comparison kind of misses the point of the M3 though.

Sorry F30 owners, the F30 the weakest car BMW ever made, I had it for 6 months and I traded it in, I'd take the E30 M3 over the F30 at any time.

Yeh I am not sure what's not to like on the current 3 series. But more so I never understand why all these car magazines keep drag racing BMW's. If you are truly looking for something that performs well in a drag race I am pretty sure you wouldn't ever look in the BMW lineup...

The interior on my F30 M Sport 335i is much improved over the E90. The exterior styling is much more aggressive as well. My first F30 turned out to be a lemon. After BMW bought the car back, I was leaning toward an E92 M3. I loved the performance. However, the interior looked terribly dated. Just couldn't live with that.

That being said I still like my E46 interior the best, it could be updated a bit but its still my fav out of any 3 series ever built. I think the F30 could have been really nice if it wasnt for the awkward screen, I like the integration in the F10 much better. I digress, this comparison has absolutely no point, and even if they were going to do just a drag race, get the same driver to do both cars so its fair. Really should be a track test as others have said. Anyone else impressed with the M3's 30 mpg highway? Not bad for a high strung engine.
