Perhaps more-so in the UK with our excellent road qualities; each bump or groove or pot-hole will jump the wheels, if you have your thumbs hooked you are more likely to turn the wheel slightly and exxagerate the movement. With a light grip (as mentioned) you have more contol.

In addition, if, god forbid, you have an accident in your car and you have your thumbs hooked, you will end up with bilateral radial fractures where the forces of the impact are multiplied through the inside of the thumb towards the joints and into the wrists. Chances are you'll also end up with painful trapezoid fractures in the hand and fracture dislocations of the carpo-metocarpal joint.

If you have an airbag that goes off whilst your thumbs are hooked inside the wheel you are almost definitely going to have the fracture dislocation of the joint as it forces your hand and arm sideways whilst your thumb is caught...

Edit; I'm good at being pessimistic is seems... BUT that all comes from experience
I don't disagree... as mentioned the picture was illustration only.

However, many race drivers will not place their thumb on the rest. It's more about how hard your grip is on the wheel than thumb position. Having your thumb on the rest would actually restrict steering wheel movement in extreme driving. Also, no air bags on dedicated track cars .

Chicks and those who know how to drive properly Those who drive around with one hand think they look cool and think they know how to drive but neither are particularly true j/k... kind of.

This. Unless you're driving a manual that requires a hand to constantly be on the shift, all true driving requires two hands. You'll never see a rally/race driver going around the track one handed. One handed is for city cruisers trolling for chicks or ppl on the phone....

I position my hands wherever I feel it most comfortable, generally 10/2. When I want to shift with the flappy paddles, it's 9/3 for ease of finger placement.

When you are used to 10/2, I agree 9/3 is a little awkward.

High performance driving is 10-3 even on hard turns you will reposition to 10-3 as it permits. Soft grip. Slight bend. Relaxed. Smooth inputs. When i went around with the insturctor driving it was really fast and the steering looked effortless. Even if you have to shift you dont rest your hand on there. Lol.

I remember at hpde an instructor said try to get to know the course on a few laps barely holding the wheel. Hard to do.

All that goes out the window when you need to do the gangsta lean. But my back wont take that anymore. Haha.

By the way what kind of AC unit is in the pictures. It is auto but not two zone. Does anyone has it? Is it a Eurospec thing?
Off topic, but yes the AC unit displayed in the top picture is the default AC in Europe. It is single zone and lacks the pollen filter.
We have a separate option (#534) which gives you the "Automatic Air Conditioning" with dual-zone and the pollen filter as the one that is standard in the US at a premium of around 700 euros.

You don't need to have your hand on the shifter all the time in a manual . I personally drive with one hand most of the time, the other relaxing on the armrest.

It does also depends on the driving speed and the road layout. High speed and/or sharp turn must be driven with both hand on the steering wheel, otherwise you're just gonna crash.

And BMW, like most manufaturers, suggest the optimal hand position ( 9 and 3 )

Sorry for the OF, but where in europe do you live that you have to pay for the automatic air conditioning? Germany?

WAY OT but... This is a bit of an old stereotype that isn't true any longer. The 2012 C63 is very comparable to the E92 M3 in handling... the E92 M3 is still better in my experience (I've owned 2 of them) but the gap is very small now. The freight train handling of MB of yesteryear is not really the case any longer... at least with the new C63 coupe.

Well Ok, it depends on country.

In Germany, you always have to order it separate. In the UK, you get it starting at the 'SE' trim. In Belgium you get it automatically from a 328i and up. And in the Netherlands you get it with the 330d/335i. Each country has its own baseline configurations like that.

Its nose heavy - slow turn in and with that much torque?! I dont know it still wont outhandle the m3. You take a quick turn and itll either go tail happy or have traction control constantly kicking in. Basically slow on turns fast on straights. Good for the streets bad for the track.
Sure it may have gotten closer in difference but its still gobs away.

C63 i personally dont like and am aware the dynamics of the car improved. But if i wanted an amg it would have to be the cls/sls.

OK thanks for the education . Seeing as I'm the guy who has owned both cars and tracked both cars fairly extensively (and have quite a bit of seat time at the track in many different cars), I would have no idea how the C63 handles compared to the M3

Many who actually have driven both cars would disagree with you. This isn't to say the M3 isn't still the better track car (it is, IMO) but the difference is marginal at best and on certain tracks, the C63 would be faster. The 2012 C63 coupe laps the Nurburgring faster than the E92 M3 did... it wouldn't do that if it couldn't "turn-in" and was too "nose heavy". You can prefer the M3 (many do and in many ways I do still to this day) but don't let that bias make you close minded or spout off incorrect information. The M3 is still the preferred track car by a small margin, IMO, but the C63 is nowhere close to "gobs" away in performance on the track... it would be a drivers race. On the street, the M3 would see nothing but C63 tailpipes. The next M3, I'm hoping, is better again as that will be just about the time for a car change for me

Sorry, OP, we shouldn't be off topic like this as it isn't relevant in this thread!!

I guess we should all drive RS5's since it beat out both. But you win.

I think you are missing my point... I ultimately agree with you... the only thing I disagree with is what you perceive to be a large gap in performance between the two cars. It is a small gap.

Anyway, we are very
