397 staggered winter tires question

Hi,

I have a 340i, RWD that came with 18 inch 397 style wheels. I opted for summer tires, so it has RFTs 225/45R18 in front and 255/40R18 in the rear. Does that mean that the rim width is different in front and rear?

From what I saw on forum 397 style rims are 18x8 front and rear. I want to get either Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4 or X-Ice 3, but confused to what size I need.

Thank you.

Thank you. So what tire size should I get for winter? Should it be same size for all 4 wheels?

yes. square setup for winter..for more neautral handling.225/45/18 or even 235/45/18 for a little extra sidewall should be good.Id prefer 235 45 18 myself.

question..how on earth did you manage to fit a 255 width on a 397..pics.

OP, I can't see that your F30 did come with square 397 wheels and staggered tires from factory. Please double check!

I always recommend square setups for winter, with 397 wheels 235/45-18 tires are a good option as already have been mentioned.

If your car came from factory with tire size 225/45R18 in front and 255/40R18 in the rear, then you have different size rims, 8 in front and 8.5 in rear.

Yes, this is correct.

Although for winter, you can use size 225/45/18 or 235/45/18 on all 4 wheels. Even if the fronts are 8" and rears are 8.5", 225/45/18 or 235/45/18 will fit on both front and rear wheels.

Using the same size on all 4 corners will help winter traction.

I have a 340i RWD. The X-ice are Amazing in the snow/ice. My traction control light does not even come on. I run Michelin Pilot A/S+ all year and the X-ice Jan-Feb. The trade off is the X-ice are a bit squishy, but with an 2 extra lb's of air they are good in the dry too. I don't think you can get Alpines in 225/45/18. They are a performance winter vs the X-ice purely winter. But they are really good.

But style 397 wheels do not come in staggered sizes, only the 8x18" ET34 size exists!

This is a pic of the rear wheel, that's 397 right? It's the tires that came with the car, when ordering I selected the free option "summer staggered".

I stand corrected!

This was new info for me, the staggered 397 wheels must have been introduced with the LCI.
