Has anyone updated their ProNav maps in their F30 yet?

Has anyone attempted to update their maps on the pro Nav in their F30? I have the Premium 2013-2 European maps ready to go?

I’m looking for a little guidance on how to do this as I have been pulling my hair out most of yesterday evening.

I have the three USB sticks but I’m not sure if the file / folder format is correct. I also have the FSC code ready to go.

Now, do I plug them in to the USB in the armrest or the one in the glovebox? :

What screen do I go to in the iDrive? Software update or somewhere else?:

Can anyone please help.

To start the navigation map update, plug the first USB stick into the glove box USB port.

You will be prompted for the FSC code and if entered correctly, the update will then proceed.

It should take about 40 minutes or so, to do all three USB sticks – you will be automatically prompted for the next one as and when required.

If you plug the first USB stick into the glove box USB port and you are not prompted for a FSC code, then the map format on the stick is incorrect.

I'm pretty sure that's the maps that came on my car this month. If you are expecting a significant update I'd suggest that these are still at least 2 years out of date.

Thanks for the responses. It must be the way I've put them on the stick then.

I've plugged in the sticks into the glovebox USB and the wee red light does flash (and keeps flashing) but I get no prompt for a FSC code.

My File structure on each of the three sticks is: I have a folder named pkjdb and a file named config.nfm.

If I go into the pkjdb folder there are numerous folders and files. This is the same on each stick.

Does that sound correct?

My car is a 2012 and I work on the southside of Glasgow. None of the new M74 is on there, some of the new M80 is not on there and most of the new roads from our office in Polmedie to Parkhead just confuses the poor woman and the black panel display looks like a game of spin the bottle. So I want to update the maps as soon as.

Project this weekend then.

The structure seems ok - did you mean pkGdb instead of pkJdb for the folder name?

Maybe burn a DVD from the image for DVD 1 and see if it recognised when you place the DVD into the slot.

This will verify if the contents of the image are correct?

I've updated mine using the following procedure:
  1. Hand keys to Service Advisor
  2. Walk over to coffeee machine
  3. Deliberate over Cappucino or Espresso
  4. Pick up a packet of Custard Creams
  5. Wander around the showroom looking at the gleaming cars whilst enjoying biscuits and coffee
  6. Pick up keys from SA and viola....updated maps

Yes it is "pkgdb" not "pkjdb"

I'm having another attempt today see if I've done anything wrong.

Is someone going to tell BMW that the UK has advanced it's infrastructure since the romans and General Wade?

Still having a nightmare

Sometime it recognises the USB (I just had to be wait a bit) and tells me to start the update. However, It then tells me the files are either incomplete or have been manipulated :

I've checked the file structure and size and it checks out ok.

I've bought three higher quality 8Gb USB sticks just in case that's the problem

Umm, I would suspect the source of the image to be a issue - maybe find another torrent site?

I'll give it another go with the new sticks. If that doesn't work the discs are on ebay for about £20 - £25.

Success at last.

Managed to get the maps loaded into the car and they are working great. All the roads around my work are now there at least.

It was dodgy USB sticks, the car didn’t like. I’m not sure exactly what the problem was but they just didn't work in the car.

I ordered 3 Transend 8Gb sticks from Amazon only to find there wasn't enough room for the files on USB 3. The stick held 7.52Gb and the requirement was for 7.58Gb. So be careful what sticks you purchase.

I ended up having to nip down to Tesco and buy another stick to finish off the upload. Luckily the car waits patiently for the 3rd stick. I also found if you stop mid upload it doesn’t mess up system but re-starts asking for USB1 then USB2 in quick succession.

The money I've spent on USB sticks, FSC codes and all the messing about, it was probably cheaper to go to the dealers

That sounds like one of my little DIY jobs.

Good stuff - glad that you got it sorted and that the maps are worth the update for you. I am deliberating on whether to update mine from 2012 maps!!

My biggest gripes about Pro Nav given the cost are:-

1. It somehow manages to fail to understand the clear address formats in my iPhone contact list (i've tried adding GB/UK to the end of them as per a previous suggestion but it still hasn't helped)

2. They should offer free map updates for 3 years or something.

I have a January build and my maps doesn't have my home address on there so it was at least 18 months out of date.

Anyone know how frequently they are updated? Where do you get the update from? Do you buy it on a USB stick? How much?

Yes, I agree, mine seem quite a lot out of date, as they are 2012. In retrospect, I should have got them to update to the latest maps as part of the deal when buying the car (brought it at a year old as an AUC)!!
The update should be part of the BMW assist package for the first 3 years, as you say, especially considering how out of date they seem!

See www.bmwnavigation.co.uk/bmw-cic as a source for the map DVD's and also the required FSC code.

It certainly was worth it for me but the roads were major changes to the local road network and the addition of a motorway. I suspect you are less likely to see your house for some time if it's a new build estate road. These SatNav boys have to get round to driving it to record the road location for the system. Priorities would dictate that well driven new roads are recorded first and new urban roads / estates fall somewhere down the lists.
