Steering rack post surgery....

Hi,

I am looking at replacing the steering rack of My 2014 BMW 328i F30. My question is, once the rack is replaced by a doner rack, is it driveable? Does the power steering work straight away? I would need to then drive it to the BMW garage to get programmed / coded (waiting on them to confirm if they will do this if I do the work myself).

Thanks

Lawrence

I just replaced the eps with a donor part. It’s driveable in my case. However I programmed right away since I have esys installed. Hard to tell if it can go far without coding. The worst case is to tow it.

I carefully adjusted the tie rod length as same as my original eps. But the steering wheel is still off the center, by a lot! There is no way to skip a wheel alignment and do a steering recalibration in ISTA after the replacement.

Coding and EPS calibration is definitely needed.
You can do this by yourself using esys and ISTA

Thanks so much for your reply, did you do the wheel alignment yourself as well? Is ISTA hard to use to programme? Are here any guides on how to do it specifically for the steering rack?

For coding.
Connect => Read FA (VO) => Activate FA (VO) => Read (ECU) => Left click on EPS => Click on "Detect CAF for SWE" => Select the CAFD of the last displayed I-Level (the bottom one) => Select OK => Right click on EPS(the ECU itself, not the underlying CAFD) => Select CODE.
For eps calibration
ISTA service function. Powertrain > EPS / steering > calibration/ startup

Where does everyone get hold of ISTA? It doesn't look like its freely available.

Once again sorry to revive a dead thread but can anyone help me with coding? I bought a used rack and switched the eps over to my car and I need it to be coded to my vehicle and I’m hoping that this will be the solution to my issue
