Being told to slow down while doing 27 in a 25

This person wasn?t a very good judge of speed.

I find that the average Joe associates loud sound with high speed. In the past couple of years, I've had a one or two pedestrians visually tell me to "slow down" even though I was driving at or below the limit. I guess having a semi-loud exhaust makes your car look like it's traveling faster than it actually is.

I have the exact same experience after getting a louder exhaust on my car.
Most of the time when I am way below the limit.
Especially if I am driving at higher than normal RPM to increase engine response.
My current car is not a high torque BMW, but a normally aspirated MX5 with only 150Nm of torque, so revs are essential to acceleration

Calvin36 has a good point; you were speeding! I think it was either your exhaust, the BMW, both or just the BMW!

Exactly! lol

When I used to have my Z06(catless and electric cutouts) I would have to go 5 under thru my neighborhood or everyone would freak out. My wife drives her stock Jetta thru the same neighborhood 15-20 over and no one cares.

The speed limit is the LIMIT. You still need to go at a safe speed based on the situation. Were you near a crosswalk? Lots of information missing...

Yeah they saw a bmw and it being a 340i had a louder exhaust. Plus I was driving manually and had it at a higher rpm than the mini van in front of me that was going faster than I was.

I?m not sure exactly how fast I was going as it said about 30 and the speedo is overstated so I estimated about 27. There were no children present just a couple of peacocks which I avoided.

I have a piggyback tune, resonator delete and an axleback from Active Autowerke, and I get dirty looks from people around town all the time, even when I?m going at or within a few mph of the speed limit because people think loud = fast. I mean, I get it, so if I actually talk to them face to face I usually just apologize and say the car is louder than it is fast and they?re assuaged.

First ticket in my life 26 in a 25 zone. 18 years old driving my new to me 1957 FORD Fairlane 500 retractable hardtop with the roof down.

Hudson County Boulevard Police LEO, had a real bitch on about a "punk kid" driving an almost new car, bagged me near Lincoln Park on what is now JFK Blvd.

Judge threw the case out & had a few words with the LEO on an "officer please approach the bench".

I prefer to drive fast but look slow doing it and blend in with all the other non descript 3 series. Going slow while ppl think u're going fast isn't fun at all.

Had a passenger ask if I was a "Street racer guy" to which I said no and she followed up with "So you just always drive fast?" that was fast? I was probably doing 35 max. Granted it was in a 25, but I was going with flow of traffic.
