For those who park at LIRR stations

My wife and I are going to start looking for a house in Long Island. I work in NYC and get in on the earlier side (around 7:30) and would like to have a commute that is no longer than 1 hour or 1:15 max.

I'd be taking the LIRR into the city and wanted to see if anyone here does this commute and what the parking situation is like at the stations. I think Hicksville is as far as we would want to go east and it looks like they have a parking garage that I could park in. Mineola also has one so these are the towns we are starting our search around. I read that these stations can get filled up pretty quickly. For those that park at these stations, what has your experience been parking there?

Can anyone recommend any other stations with parking (possibly more north like great neck)?

Thanks

I was looking for house in Long Island but found most stations are hard to park as f.
The lot fills up early and quick and many streets need resident permit to park.

If you there early you should be able to grab a spot in the lot.
Friend of mine bought one recently in Albertson with walking distance to LIRR. Saved him much headache on commute parking.

I was looking at Great Neck South/Manhasset/Garden City area btw.

To park in the hicksville lot you need a permit. Same with the Garage, only way in is with a permit.

Can't opine on hicksville. However i do reside in Mineola. you have two options. One is to get a residents permit. i think its like 55 bucks a year. I live only a few blocks from the station do i dont need to drive. They have a few lots and spots in garages scattered about around the train station. not sure if there are any waitlists for the permits tho.

other option is a garage above the bus terminal. (MTA Intermodal center) its like 6 bucks a day and i believe its good for well over 12 hours. there is also a long term parking option which i believe gives you almost 24 hours.

There is limited street parking near the train, but mineola (i guess in an effort to keep traffic to a minimum) has alot of 90 minute parking restrictions in the general area. but there are a few roads that are without restrictions.. but usually fill up early

if you have to get in early to the city (about 35-40 minutes from mineola) the pay lot is usually full of empty spaces... i tried once around 830 and not a space to be had though.

hope this helps

Can you recommend a few neighborhoods with excellent school zones and less than 1 hour commute (public transit) to manhattan?

Move to CT. From fairfield county, the train is only about an hour to grand central. I live on the far end of fairfield county and the ride is about 80 min. Great schools, no parking issues, plenty of nice properties for all price ranges AND its not in new jersey

i'm in Clifton in the Allwood section which is the nice part of Clifton & its 13 miles from mid-town the other side is very commercial. The monthy bus ticket is $167, you can get a nice one family house much cheaper than what you would get in NY. taxes are ok nothing like LI. other nieghorhood that are nice are Nutley - Montclair -Little falls - Rutherford but it all depends on what your looking for. The roads are much better than NY gas is cheper etc..ect..
good luck on the search

one last thing in Mountclair there is no NJ bus service to NYC only the train, they do have a private company that runs to NYC but their monthy is pricey

Good luck
