Looking to lease a 335xi this week. I also test drove a 328xi and to be honest the sound of the engine wasn't very pleasing to my ears. It seemed the engine was working too hard to get the car to the speed I was trying to get. Price is about $6000 cheaper for 328 equally optioned. Does anyone have any negative experience with 335xi? Any comment would be appreciated. Signing parsers this week, but not sure on which one. Also the steering on both cars wasn't what I expected.

Your profile says 335xi so you seem to have made up your mind - or is that your current car? To me this sounds like a decision between the car you want and the car you feel you should be buying.

The engine in the 335 is awesome.

335 would be my choice, the 6 over the 4 engine for sure. I dislike cars that feel like they are struggling to get up to speed, if that's what it feels like to you, skip the 328. If you are leasing, price won't be that much more for the 335. Just my 2 cents.

What speed are you guys trying to get the car up to? From what I understand, the N20/N26 is an under-rated engine and is probably making 270-280 crank HP. Most reviews have said the powertrain is quite nice and accelerates the car much faster than they expected.

Also, if you're considering the 335xi are you also considering the Audi S4?

coming from an e60 545i, the 328i was sluggish at first, but after you get through the break through period, be willing to push the car and realize you should run in Sport 99% of the time, the 328i has been very good. I'm sure the 335 is even better, but the N20 isn't like a civic R that needs to be rev'd to get power. the 328i engine is pretty linear and gives a good punch.

saying this, I'm driving a RWD 328i. The Xdrive saps some of the power and the feeling of acceleration. Something the 335i may be needed to "feel" fast.

I wouldn't consider the S4 since the new A4 will be out next year if on schedule and this is coming from an S4 owner.

Then think about how you will feel in your 335, when an M3 pulls up next to you.

And then think about how you will feel in your M3, when an Aston Martin (or 911 or whatever your dream car is) pulls up next year.

I'm also fully satisfied in a 428. At the end of the day the 428 has more than enough power to get me in trouble (or at least that is the excuse I tell myself, truth is the 435 with the same options is over $25K more here than the 328 due to excise tax on cars more than 2 litres - if the price difference was signficantly less I would have gone 435)

Yeah your comparing different cars there really so not my point at all, an M3 to a 3 series! Hmmm

If i brought a 330d and and 335d pulled up personally i'd feel a little envious, but if an M3 pulls up along side my 335d i'd think nice car now lets have some fun because i appreciate it in a different class altogether!

If you can afford to go for the top model (In a class) and even contemplating it then I'd buy it, otherwise you'll be constantly thinking should I have?

I had an '08 335xi, changed to a '13 328ix. Drove both a few times before deciding on the 328. All else equal (however you option it out) the N20 is plenty powerful. Linear, and when you punch it, there's power in reserve. Like the previous post says, there's always another car to envy out there. Endless pursuit!

Xdrive is probably quicker off the line as AWD has more traction. Op, maybe get a lesser equipped 335 to bring prices more in line? Sound is big difference. Having said that, I'd probably go 428 personally.

Since you're leasing, the difference between the 2 shouldn't be too much (assuming these 2 have the same lease programs: residuals, rebates, etc). Go for 335 if you can afford it.

The fact that the new A4 will be coming out next year is exactly the reason I'd consider the current S4. I'm more inclined to purchase a car that is a few model years into its generation because the manufacturer has had a few years to work out the kinks.

Go with something that is practical to you. Are you gonna need that extra HP? Is the extra hp gonna get you in trouble with law by speeding and reckless endangerment? How comfortable is your finances? 9/10 people will say 335 because you give them a more choice. Also, think about the issues that each car got and see off you can live with them.
I personally have the 328 msport. It's a family car so I'm happy with it.

If there is ever a question between the 2, get the 335i. It's very unlikely you will be driving a 335i and thinking to yourself, damn, I could use less power, smaller brakes and a quiter exhaust. Boom!

This is a new first and probably dates me. I apparently own a car that does a low 14s / high 13s quarter mile at 100+ trap that is "struggling to get up to speed"

I remember in the late 90s when my Acura GSR that did low 15s in the QM was a quick car.

Amazing how times have changed.

The 328i can't do both. If you trap high 13s your trap speed will be in the 98mph range. If you trap low 14s then you may break 100mph but barely. More like 100.xmph. However the point is it won't do both, you have to pick between the two but you can't have both.

I had a 528i loaner for two weeks with the N20 and the speed was adequate.
